Leopard and Gaming?

Hey Guys,

Im currently a PC User and have been all my computing life, but after watching the KeyNote at WWDC06 i was sitting here thinking, "webclip, why cant i do that on my PC" and then i kind of figured i would probably never be able too, there are some really cool features in the new Mac OSX and some are top secret.

Do you guys think because they are now on an Intel Architecture that we will see both PC/Mac Compatible games together? i mean it seems silly for developers not to tap into that market when a mac is now capable of running most games comfortably.

Im considering purchasing a Mac, but it would be a Macbook Pro (Black) rather than a Desktop Replacement, can anyone here offer any advice on if the switch would be worth it?

The fact is that Mac was able to play games even when it was on PPC. But since the share of Mac users are peanuts compare to PC users, Game developers do not find it lucrative enough to develope game for Mac Platform. I mean, if you are running a business.. you wouldn't consider serving low-demand areas when you have a large consumer area.

Off course, with Intel transition Developers of games would have some relief as coding for different processor architecture is reduced, but still OS X which is based on FreeBSD (Unix) is different than Win32 platform... Mac users are still very few compare to Windows/PC users worldwide.

So I'd say there would be some growth in Game Titles for Mac given to Intel transition but I wudn't expect tremendous growth or Loads of titles coming for Mac.

Yeah i have considered bootcamp to those of you who have mentioned it, will bootcamp work with vista? i havent had time to do a lot of research into it.

To be honest after looking at leopard, and im thinking i dont want to have to wait 3 years for the next OS to get everything that leopard had in 2006, its quite depressing when you see the advances being made, fair enough some of them at the keynote (<- unbe) werent awe inspiring, but they never have to be, it makes your daily tasks simpler and easier, spaces, webclip, time machine, they are amazing!

So yes i am giving this serious consideration, ive visited the Apple store a few times today, i may go back again, its a very difficult choice to make.

Get the mac pro. That will run all your games no sweat. And those transgaming guys are assholes. They pretty much stole wine and redevolped it a tad and sold it when it should be free.

I agree. But that is open-source software. And to answer another question, I am pretty sure that you can run Vista in bootcamp.

TehVex.... Bootcamp isn't Emulator or Virtual Machine. It's a Boot Loader or Manager which let you install and boot into two different OSs. So since you are running XP as whole in OS and not an OS inside Mac OSX... there WILL NOT be any performance Hit.

Could you possibly do that? AFAIK there is no way to install Windows on an external drive, but I might be wrong, I haven't even tried bootcamp yet OS X is so awesome

Anyway, if anybody know a way to install Windows on an external drive (USB) please gimme some hints .

Since you can make USB drives bootable, I don't see any reason why you shouldn't be able to install Windows XP on one. I guess you should find some answers in Google.

If windows XP can be made on Live CD then there has to be way to put it on USB drive.

I run Half-Life 2 at full settings on my Macbook Pro and its very smooth! (good considering its only a notebook!)

SO I guess i had good luck... or maybe i just got my facts straight first before buying ... or commen-... nevermind... (insult not intended).

BOOTCAMP is NOT running one OS inside of another. As iGo said, its a bootloader that allows you to run either windows, macosx (or linux???) independantly of each other.

Because the new macs have intel chips, Windows will run at Full speed in bootcamp- it is not emulation.

As for cider, it looks promising in that you can run games within OSX (sort of) without the need to restart the computer- how exactly does it work though? do you have to Windows installed to run windows games?... is it virtualisation ? emulation?... it hasnt been made entirely clear from what i've read.

Awesome! you're going to love it, i love mine... Macbook PRO's only come in ONE colour (metal/silver)... you're thinking of macbook (- the Pro) which come in white or black. I personally recommend getting the Pro, as it is better for gaming with a larger screen, (keyboard?), and better specs mostly...

Get 1GB of Ram for gaming- (i got a single stick, so that there's a slot free for future upgrades) and it handles gaming quite nice.

I also have the 2ghz model, (not the 1.8 or 2.16 encase you were wondering), whether this affects it that much i dont know, but from memory the 2+ ghz models have a better graphics card (256mb over 128 mb) over the 1.8

If you really want just a gaming rig that has Mac OSX there as well, and are willing to fork out the extra $$$ then get the Mac Pro! that thing is a beast, and its insides are a work of art, and the Specs looks great.
