If it's clearly stated that icons are payware, and it's policy not to distribute them, don't do it anyway.

One word sums up my reaction to that price. YEOUCH!!!

What makes them so special that they THINK they can charge $350 (OK $349 but then again why quilbble over a mere $1). That is a new iPod or GFX card for that kind of dough. Not mention there are lots of excellent free sets out there.

The price behind all stock icons is the licensing. Regular icons that you download are only available for non-commercial use. That means while you and I can have a spiffy desktop, a business cannot use them on their online store or business. Commercial iconsets are available for businesses to purchase and use, royalty free, on their sites and in their applications legally. While 350 dollars might seem steep, consider that a business might earn that in a day on a site that its icons only need changing every few years.

Most businesses pay THOUSANDS for custom icons for that added competitive, distinctive edge.

Then shouldn't there be a different licence (with a different price of course) for home users and businesses?

Nope, because anyone could just get the home license, put it on a site, and say it's royalty free. It is much easier to control access by restricting downloads.

Some sites release demos freely, with five or so icons and the rest remaining payware. For the most part, though, these icons are too generic for system use so devs don't bother releasing to the GUI scene.

beautiful icons though...
