Adding a search bar to Explorer

I'm talking windows explorer... its fast and reliable, has customisable tool bar positions, has thumbnail view options, is relatively bug free, skins with the theme and now with findexer its so close to being the ultimate finder clone...

Q- So you want to remove the menus then right?

A- No i can use a hack to do that...

Q- so whats missing?

A- the search bar.

Yes I know you can make the address bar look like a search bar using styler, but that defeats the point...

Yes I know you can use MSN desktop search or google desktop in the taskbar, but that defeats the point...

wouldn't it be awesome to have 'windows desktop search' in an explorer bar at the top right of every window? just like finder, just like vista (copy cat)

surely this can be done!... if you can add search bars to search the web into Internet Explorer, surely you can add one into windows explorer so search your own computer... calling all developers! :D

I wouldn't exactly call it the perfect finder clone... It doesn't have colour labels or the same style of selecting stuff as the finder (The look of an icon when you select it. Nexplorer emulates this and Gnome also does it)

Other than that and the search bar bit I could believe that it is a very close finder clone.

#407693

mmm.... have you tried icolor folder? ... its colours the icons at least using a menu item.

is a search bar possible?

Levi- The perfectionist,

Maybe I don't understood you.. Did you try'MAC search' [http://landvermesser.tripod.com/MacSearch.html]?

Btw, can you give me some information about 'hack' that disables menus?

#407708

If you have Styler installed, you can disable menus using that. Styler 1.4 is free I believe, search the forums.

And I think Levi means a search bar with an explorer window, as opposed to a search bar on the taskbar like MACsearch.

#407709

Zaft,

ok.. we talking about different things)... cuz I mean menus not only in winexplorer but in other apps..

#407726

The thing I love most about the finder is the column view - it makes finding stuff so much quicker and easier.

#407731

can i get rid of the vertical seperator?

ok i exaggerated a little, the hack doesnt get rid of the menu completely, but rather allows you to put all of them into one menu which you can name what you like.

It involves modding the browselc.exe file ... and then replacing the original... its dangerous, but if you're game heres the link to the instructions http://wint.virtualplastic.net/showtweak.php?tweak_id=28 -the site has heaps of different explorer hacks...

Yes im wanting a search bar that appears inside explorer windows not in the windows taskbar... checkout the screenshot above of findexer, see that round address bar, if that were a search bar it would be perfect... or preferably an address bar and optional search bar would be nice :P

Hi

I used Finder Bar. Then I installed FindeXer, and uninstalled Finder Bar. In FindeXer options I sign to FindeXer will be default in Explorer but it isn't default... Now if I open a window I have gray sidebar with "x" and I havent Finder Bar either FindeXer. How I fix it? What I can do to Findexer will be my default?

#407976

i had finderbar, then uninstalled it followed the readme of findexer and it worked fine.

1- Download the latest version of findexer here; http://tomseffect.com/

2- Unregister ALL previous findexer installations by opening the 'unregister' file

3- Delete the original folder of dll files and restart your computer

4- unzip the new findexer you downloaded, and copy the ENTIRE folder somewhere

5- re-register your new findexer dll's using the 'register' bat file.

- should work... now on-topic please! Search bars!

I dont think its likely... to be able to mods in explorer usually it involves replacing something thats already there such as common tasks, adding a sidebar or adding in an actual program into the toolbars... how many mods have you actually seen which actually effect something within that window space?

All i've seen is the folder's background changed by the theme, but thats got nothing to do with the explorer file.

You would need to modify the very core of explorer to have it do such a thing, and that is to say the least, is a lot of work.

thats why I believe in explorer bars and common task mods, they are self contained programs usually that dont actually need modding of the explorer file (the menus hack is an exception) that usually only require a registry hack to have them open by default.

Correct me if i'm wrong programmers (thats just what i've gathered)

I dont mean to whine, but there has been a lot of off topic convo here, I started this thread to ask about search bars... sorry.

perhaps I didnt make that clear enough in the title/opening post... so thanx Nightcrawler.

#408293

Well explained, that's what I thought too but it was worth an ask.

Back on topic. This is the last off topic post. :) (from me anyway)

#408337

thats ok... i didnt make myself clear enough in the first post.

* I've seen programs that allow you to create your own programs in the explorer bars; but usually these only act as links, or search bar for Internet explorer... I tried fiddling around with these programs but couldn't really integrate it with windows desktop search in any way...

someone will need to actually custom create a program that can utilise the search ability of programs such as google desktop or desktop search, by somehow using the .EXE ...

:/

you are talking about the adress bar in Explorer, man I want that replaced so bad, but at the same time to retain functionality unlike the "Search Bar" of styler

no i dont necessarily mean replacing the address bar, that can stay so long as the ability to hide it remains.

What im talking about is an additional search bar which you can put next to the address bar, or alternatively, hide the address bar and just show the search bar.

A bar that utilises windows desktop search program would be desirable.

Maybe someone can program the search companion into a toolbar or something, unless you are looking for something more like spotlight.

no thats what i want! that would be great! :)

although the msn search toolbar/ google desktop search is more effective/faster... but the search companion would still be good...
