OK, I want to network my Laptop and My big desktop to copy some stuff... It doesnt read burned CDs so... im left with the option to hook both computers up a dial up modem connection.
Do both computers have to have Windows NT OS's?
Is this even possible?
The laptop has Windows 98 SE and I have Windows XP home SP1 (2600)
I do have an old copy of Windows NT workstatoion 3.51, but It might be too old, oh yeah and I have Windows 2000 also if I ned to install that..
Yes, you can do it. You need a Crossover Phone Line though. I havent seen one of those in years. Good luck.
In XP, set up a new network connection, and choose over a modem. The wizard will walk you through it.
Keep in mind, thats really slow (56k). Any big file will take you hourse if you days to transfer.
Why doesn't your laptop have a network connection? You can buy PCMCIA network cards cheap.

Well, just buy one, they are $5. You get, hmmm.... lets see, 1000x faster speed over a network.
I wouldnt try it. Too much of a pain in the ass. Youll probably run into a lot of problems. <_
just go w/ the network cards,
for desktop $5
for laptop $10
crossover cable $5
$20 total, not that much, and you save A LOT of time and effort (xp will automatically detect it)
I've done this before, with windows95 even. This was so I could play games. I installed the dial-up server on one and the protocols and setup the other.
But it is kind of a pain to get them connected to each other. It's even worse when the computers aren't in the same building, heh. One time I setup a dialup connection between my computer and a friends mac to play multiplayer Doom, it worked but we kept on getting disconnected.
do the computers not have a parallel or serial port ?

Wow! Doom supports Mac and pc play together? I know there are a lot of games that do support that now, actually. Warcraft III etc.
EDIT: I would say your best bet is to network the two, as DHSMaroon suggested. You'll save a lot of time thats for sure!!!

and im sorry if you were being serious, but parallel and serial connection would probably be much much much slower
i know serial connections have to be really close, cuz the signal degrades over length (i dont think parallel is like that, though)
just network like dhsmaroon said, its gonna be so much easier and you wont regret it. the community can help you if you cant get it to work
