Bands like Pink Floyd, King Crimson, Genesis, Dream Theater, Meshuggah, Riverside, Pain Of Salvation, Yes, Rush, Jethro Tull etc.

What a weird thing - Progressive Rock...I just wanted to point out how inaccurate is to categorize music this way. You guys put Frank Zappa, King Crimson (which KC? 70's/80's/90's/00's?), Tool, Meshuggah and Genesis (with or without Phill Collins?) in one row...listen to one song of each of these artists and the definition "progressive rock" will become incredibly wide.
I'm not dissing prog rock per se - I love it myself, whatever it is - I'm only dissing futile categorisation efforts. In no way you will talk me into conclusion that "Corridor of Chameleons" by Meshuggah, "Titties and Beer" by Frank Z. and "ProzaKc Blues" by King Crimson all fall under the category of progressive rock. To me these songs are from completely different worlds, the only thing that's common for them is that they are cool If a definition tries to embrace too many objects, it becomes empty and pointless. And it surely happened to term 'progressive rock' which grew over time and became so huge and filled with such various music that IMO it's impossible to talk about it. Someone said that "to talk about music is like to dance about architecture"
@Slewed: If you really want to know what progressive rock is all about get these albums: Jethro Tull's Thick As A Brick, Rush's 2112, Pink Floyd's Dark Side Of The Moon, Dream Theater's Scenes From a Memory, Yes' Close To The Edge, Genesis' Foxtrot, King Crimson's In The Court Of The Crimson King and Tool's Ænima
OK I know that's a sh**load of albums, but these will give you a great boost if you're willing to lean more about prog rock. Again you might hate everything about it

i keed. i keed. I consider Progressive Rock anything that goes beyond the norm. I agree that it is a wide genre nowadays but I still consider it a genre. I'll single out Tool, by the way they use unconvential instruments and sounds to create beautiful music. This I consider progressive.
bleh, i don't think this is my sorta music, although i have a few similar tracks here and there in my library, ill stick to my incredibly wide genre that has been mislabelled "electronica and dance", and the other ones i like
