RIAA Restrictions

This has to be the most insane thing ever...

"We already know that the entertainment industry loves to try to get people to pay for every possible use of their content. Remember the filmmaker who almost couldn't release his documentary because there was a four and a half second clip of The Simpsons playing in the background in one scene? It seems that with the rise of user-generated video, a lot more people are learning about the fun of licensing rights. The RIAA is apparently sending out cease-and-desist letters to YouTube users who dare to put up videos of things such as themselves dancing to music they haven't licensed. It's difficult to see how the RIAA can make a credible claim of "losses" in this case. Clearly, some kids videotaping themselves bopping along to some song aren't going to pay a license fee -- and these sorts of viral videos tend to help build up more interest in artists. So what good does it do to go after these videos?"

yeah, they already puuled the plug on discussing this at neowin. i don't really know that there's much to discuss. the riaa is a dinosaur in it's last death throes. they're just trying to get every penny they can before burning in hell. the internet and digital music will make it possible, for the first time with ease, for artists to make money instead of the labels. sony? seeya! bmg? bfd! sire? nara! (get it? sayunaara!) i've said elsewhere and i say again: hell is reserved for baby rapers and the riaa.

I'm not looking to get a flame war started, just a discussion. My beef is why would you constantly put a strangle hold on both your customers and your product. People are actually going out to buy Cd's now because of the whole DRM thing, so why can't they stop beating a dead horse? they are making money hand over fist and they continue to lock down their industry. all the time at our expense.

My opinion is that music should be created for the purpose of pleasing the people that listen to it, not for making money. I am completely anti-RIAA, and if I ever release an album of music, I'll make it cheap to buy the CD, and really won't care if it's on the internet.

I can understand not wanting people to steal music and protecting your work, but why take it to such extremes. Artists should start selling cd's online. cuts out the middle man.

As a musician, I'm all for protecting what's mine.

But not to the extreme that the RIAA is doing it.

And yea... I did it for the pleasure of playing AND to make money.

It takes a lot of hard work to create and entire CD worth of music.

Studio time is not free. Equipment is not free. My main guitar costs nearly $3,000.00

Amps, effects processors, the gas to get to and from the studio, etc.. etc.

It all cost money.

The RIAA use to serve a purpose, but I think they have gone overboard with their Spanish Inquisition style tactics.

Would I ***** over someone using 4 seconds worth of my stuff in a clip... hell no.

Same goes for the you-tube folks, I think it's a compliment.

But the moment it starts REALLY affecting MY bottom line, yea, I'll sue your ass.

I don't play professionaly any more and haven't recorded anything in nearly 10 years, but what I have done in the past is still out there and I retained all my publishing rights and ownership.

Hey, ya never know. I still get a royalty check every year from BMI because some radio station in Sao Palo, Brazil uses one of my pieces in a regular radio ad. Hey... I made $15 last year. :cool:

This is really getting ridiculous. People that put music in their videos? No matter how much restrictions they put on music/entertainment, users on the internet will always get away with it.

But, iTunes sells music
