New Mac User! Can't Connect to Other Computers

I just received my new MacBook today and it's beautiful. It's running extremely well. I'd like to move my music collection from my desktop to the macbook, but I'm having trouble connecting to other computers. When I go to "Network Neighborhood" in Windows, it shows a list of all computers and shared folders on my network. When I go into "Network" in Finder, I don't see anything. I then attempt to use "Go -> Connect to Server." I type in "192.168.0.2" which is the computer I'm trying to connect to. It tells me that it's unable to connect. I then use "smb: 192......" but it still doesn't work. I then tried using the computer's name, "homecomp" and it doesn't work. I can't connect to it! It connects fine on a windows computer and laptop. What's wrong?

First, you have to type in a share point. i.e., "smb:192.168.0.2share_name ".

You cannot browse a Windows computer with a Mac unless you have "everyone" listed in the access list for the share.

Make sure you don't have any firewall restrictions in place.

Also, make sure you are connecting with the right user id and password.

What username and password is it? I never get prompted for one when browsing other computers via Windows.

What ID do you use to log into your Windows PC?

That would be the ID.

Please tell me you don't have your PC set to auto login or login without entering a password.

Haha, there's really no reason for me to have it password protected. It's a personal computer for home use after all. But then again, it is password protected. I just never realized I'd have to log in just to browse its shared files. I mean, it's shared after all.

go to system prefs, sharing, enable windows sharing

to reach the mac from pc, connect to ipuser_name

to reach pc from mac, open finder, network, and select the correct workgroup

Do I need to enable sharing if I just want to use the mac to access PCs? What if the correct workgroup doesn't show up in networK? How do I change the Mac's workgroup? Sorry if these questions are redundant. I don't have the mac in front of me right now.

AHH! It works! It shows up under the correct workgroup under "network." I wonder why it wasn't working before. I also had some problems with airport connecting to my WPA secured network, but it seems to be working fine now.

im new to mac as well, but thats the method i like... the best part for me is that i can share my laptop when i want it shared... i havent been able to figure out how to share only certain directories rather than my entire "g8trtim" home directory... i mean, i cant restrict the share directory to only my public folder... atleast i havent found a way...

i hear that networking w/ other macs is much simpler.... i dont think the workgroup are as customizable in osx... not that they need to be really... its rather annoying making sure all computers are on the same workgroup within the same network...

I didn't have to.

Furthermore, I just popped in 2 GB of Ram. Wow, memory was hard to install. I had to push to the point that I thought I'd break the Macbook. But it finally popped in and the Mac is a treat to use! It's so zippy, haha. There's still some quirks because of its difference compared to windows, but i'm sure i'll get accustomed to that soon.
