Can someone suggest a good Anti-Virus program that doesnt run in the background?

i've read reviews of all the major anti virus software programs.. i've tried a few of them in the past, but i've been disappointed with how they run.. I'd like a program that I can install and use on my own terms, rather than having a process run in the background..

Can someone recommend any?

Try: Avast! or AVG. I use them both and I've had all pleasent experiences.

doesn't avast and avg run in the background?

Yea they do, thats why i canned avast, it was using 12- 20 mb or ram for me, when idle.

how often are the definitions for clamwin updated?

hard to say... everytime I start'er up, new definitions download, but I haven't been virus scanning much lately. Best try yourself; yeah..

the portable version is probably the one you want.
