I was wondering what the best video card i can get for my computer with a 200w power supply is..
i already have a geforce mx440.. is there anything better? everything i look at seems to require at least 250w.
thanks.

Honestly, I doubt you can do any better than what you have with a 200w power supply. It's a wonder you can do anything with that.
Most half decent cards now won't run on anything less than a 300w. My advice, upgrade your power supply first.
thanks. but ive been told that the power supply isn't able to be upgraded, since it's an hp computer. i was told that it was a propietary power supply..

what model hp? i helped a friend replace the psu in his hp with no problem. as a matter of fact, i have a hard time believing it's anything other than a standard atx psu.
i upgraded my compaq pretty easily
its an hp 854
yeah, hp only has the 200w available as a replacement. but, they don't say if it's a standard atx psu. i'll bet money it is, judging from the pic of the tower. i'd go to your local pc superstore (fry's, compusa, etc.) and get a 300-350w psu. if it doesn't fit, you can always take it back. i'm sure it'll fit, though.
i work on these type of machines all day and a normal axt will not fit. the problem is the where everything fits in the case. as far as the card goes you can get a 5500 that should work on 200 watts.

ok.. i've looked at a few 5500's and it says under the requirements that it requires 250..
how much of a difference is the 5500 over the mx440?
Big difference.
Big difference.
oh really? thanks for the help!
does anyone know of any ati cards that can be used with a 200w supply?
a 200W power supply will be very limiting... if you are looking to invest in upgrading your computer, you may consider buying a new tower and a larger power supply. Maybe I'm mistaken and hoping HP doesnt do really weird stuff, but the rest of your components (mobo, drives, etc) should all be standard ATX compliant. I recommend Antec cases and powersupplies. check out newegg for great prices and amazing shipping response.
thanks for the suggestion, but i like the tower that it is currently in. i use this desktop as a media center (it was the first media center computer from hp), and it looks nice with my home theater setup.
i'd just like to possibly upgrade the video card- maybe to an ati card, so i can output to component video.. are there any lowscale 9600s by a third party company?
I just updated my HP pavilion's 300Watt power supply with a 400Watt from CensusPC.com.
I purchased a Bestec power supply since that is the brand that came with the HP. It came in a secondary box w/o any retail packaging, so I am guessing that these are OEM replacement power supplies for HP. I am having no trouble at all with it. I also use a GeForce 6800 video card.

well id advise you to invest in a better psu, dont ever overlook that as it can really mess up the rest of your hardware. plus most graphics cards today needs alot of juice so yeah you better get atleast a 400watt psu.
I'd say maybe a 9200.
Well I'm running an ATI Radeon 9600 Pro 128 MB on my Compaq with it's 250 watt power supply. Not sure but maybe you could run a 9600 non-pro on a 200 watt.
Ohh, yeah, I forgot on my last pc it had a 250 watt with an ATI Radium 9600, non pro. Don't know how it'll run lower then that though, sorry >_
