Here Or Not?

I've been wondering... and it hit me, Would there be an aqua-soft if the OSX interface was different than it is now? Would we have spent days and weeks and months and years constantly skinning, changing, hacking, creating, and coding if the interface was different? hmmm.....

I would say yeah...before Aqua, there was still a bit of a movement (though not as big as it is now, but hey, it was 4 years ago) to skin the PC to look like a Mac. Primarily, it was Stardock leading the way with Windowblinds, then came Jeff Bargman (sp?) with WinMac, which is called ObjectBar today. So yes, I think we would have been here regardless, though maybe not on such a large scale.

If it looked better than the pc (even by only 0.5%), we'd be skinning it.

Ah Jeff made MacVision not WinMac. Tony Chow made the original WinMac almost 6 years ago. So I guess you can say he is really the pioneer that started the whole push to put a Mac OS interface on Windows. :D

There would not be an Aqua-Soft today. I can very well tell you that during the very first year it was that small group of us that really kept it together...most people played with the look then left.

Something about the look really caught our eye, and even though Platinum has been done on Windowblinds, it wasn't anything more than just a few small people offering OS8 & OS9 themes as part of a larger theme section on a few websites.

Even Dangeruss had made a great Aqua like WB1 skin, but I have to say if it wasn't for our fanatacism about the entire look the Aqua community would still be splintered to this day.

At least, it's what I like to believe - don't shatter my dream by telling me otherwise. :6

I will make that dream into a "reality" by saying that I agree! :) I hated the way Macs looked until Aqua. I think it's a theme that appeals to most people. The fact that alternative user-made Mac themes are also being ported over to Windows is a bonus. :rule:

I Think DZ is milking this "site founder" thing. I was emulating Aqua long before OSX.

Shhhh. >.<

Hey, don't just write me off like that. I was changing my font color on DOS pre-OSX. Dont believe me? I have screenshots.

Then again, maybe that was turquoise, not aqua. Oh well.

I meant "Shhhh" as in "Don't give away my secret of milking my status as site founder".

Anyway, I completely believe you. My brother and I had seen preview pics of the interface long before the beta was released in some magazine. They were talking about "Apples next big mistake". Hah.

Anyhow, we tried making quite a few WB1 skins, however support at the time sucked nuts, so we abandoned it in favor of an EFX skin we made. We weren't doing screenshots though...wish I had some of those old schemes stored somewhere.

Oh, I understand. Most people just tell me to be quiet when I talk, though. :shy:

You could think of it as a mistake though. I mean, there market share IS going down. They had 10% when the origional iMac came out, now its down to 4-5%. I use to see whole companies buying iMacs for desktop work, and the only companies you see buying all macs now are video/audio type stuff. I blame the price though, not the OS

Oh, but how Beautiful my Windows 98 machine looked for a while. I think I was actually using your DesktopX dock DZ, now that I think about it. Wow, im a loser.

#36597

Yeah, that sucks that you were using one of my DesktopX themes. I only make good wallpapers - everything else by me pretty much sux. Loser. :D

Seriously, it's good to see an old school Aquafanatic...
