Slow Computer

Hopefully this is the right place to post this.

I really need some help.

My computer used to be rather fast, but ever since I started modding my desktop with Flyakite, and then later with other programs (AveDesk, SypSearh etc.), my computer seems to be getting slower. Programs now take awhile to open, and it takes awhile to log off, and trying to open the menu on the desktop (right click) takes forever. Even if I close all the programs (ObjectDock, AveDesk, SpySearch, YzShadow, WinRoll, UberIcon) right clicking the desktop takes forever still, but programs open a bit faster, but the wait time is still noticable. Even on another person's account (who has the default Windows look, with no extra stuff) , the same problems occur. I've tried defragmenting my hard drive, deleting files from the hard drive, but nothing happens. This problem is really annoyiing and I would like som help.Any suggestions?

I could gladly help you out, but I need your sys specs. From what you told us you could be lacking RAM memory for all the apps to run smoothly simultaneously

#390329

I'm not good with hardware, and I got all of this from EA Game's EAsy Info..

CPU: Pentium 4 (1991 MhZ)

Total Memory: 256MB

Free Memory: 40MB

Do you need anything else?

-Ertai

//Edit: The computer is still slow even if I close all the programs.

#390332

The CPU is pretty good, but the 256 MB of memory is very lacking nowadays, specially with new games. I'd suggest bumping up to either 512, or one gig, depends on your choice.

#390341

yeah. 256 MB is going to be sluggish even without modding. go to a gig. you won't regret it.

#390342

Ok... But why was it faster before the modding, and now, even with all the stuff closed, it's slow...?

Sorry for asking so many questions.. The other users on this computer are kinda getting annoyed..

#390343

wow cool sorry to be off topic but im honoured you used my pic in ur display pic ertai88! lawl

#390345

More Offtopic stuff:

Thanks again for letting me use it. Paint messed up the quality though.. xD

#390346

I find that too Ertai88, and I'm running flyakite with only RK launcher installed, avedesk, rainlender and thats it really. I have a 1.2GHz centrino with 768MB ram. Might be other programs i use.. or just i need to get a new laptop! haha

#390348

definitly ram, i dont know how much resources flyakite uses up but im sure all the programs used for modding, on top of your usual programs such as firefox, itunes etc eats up alot of your ram, and in your case most of it. 256 is way too low by todays standards, i suggest getting atleast a gig of ram espically if you play games with your pc. personally i have 512mb of ram and my pc is slow at loading up, i would get another 512 but i dont want to upgrade this pc any longer as i plan on getting a mac real soon. so yea get yourself some more ram.

#390354

And yes thats the reason also even though youre closing the programs, theres some memory that stas allocated, adn some programs that stay consuming it with hidden processes

#390355

u could also remove programs that u don't use, use the windows tools such as Disk cleanup, disk defragmenter, and I recommend you to use a program that removes the registries that are no longer used

#390361

@Everyone: Thanks for you help. I really appreciate it. :D

@gav85:

The Flyakite pack itself just injects the resources straight into the Windows system files, replacing the default resources so performance should still be exactly the same as before with zero performance hit. However, Flyakite includes some applications such as RK Launcher which may impact on system performance depending on your system specs. Since you're doing e-mail, surfing, etc. I believe this to be a non-issue.

Guess I'll just have to get a macbook pro....lol

hello

I am having that same problem -I have 256 ram ,but I have laptop that I dont think I can upgrade any more based on the laptop configuration -so i have resorted to using ram boosters such as FreeRamxp which works great if you configure it correctly for your use of the computer and what you want out of it- I have just used the defaullt and it was not enough so I changed the config and it works better and it updates the ram automatically ,either at a set time or when your ram gets below a certain level ( user defined).

My partial stats:

Compaq presario

995mHz

256 ram

18 gigs -down to 3.4 gigs so my point is it could be disk space

-I used a background defragmenter called Diskeeper 10 Professional Edition (setting (Set it and Forget It) work great in the background

Windows disk cleaner and a third pary disk cleaner(Disk Cleaner) that also get cetain files that the windows version does not get

My personal problems more than likely , are using too much disk space with extranous stuff that I dont use

Use Bootvis (Microsoft) to start your PC faster.

First Trace, Next Boot + Drivers delays, then reboot. Trace, Optimize System and it automatically reboot.

I don't know if it's the right answer to your questions, but it works really nice. :)

@Chazoul: Yeah, it's happening with me too, I guess I'll try that :)

Someone mentioned earlier about the registry entries... The windows registry is a bloated pig, and can definitely cause problems as you install/uninstall programs from your computer and use your system. Unfortunately, a lot of programs seem to leave traces behind in the registry, even when you're deleted them.

Just a few days ago I did a registry clean/defrag, and since I didn't have a formal program to do it before, it had been a while... it found 1078 errors in the registry, which is just plain scary, and sad.

Definitely do a good clean and defrag of your registry, along with earlier suggestions about clearing out processes running in the background, and upping your RAM to at least a gig, and hopefully you will notice a difference.

I recommend Tune Up Utilities for the registry cleaning/defragging, works very well. ;)

1. solution attemp : Switching from YZ-Shadows to Stardock's WindowFX

After I've found out, that Yz-Shadows cauzes many leeks of my system, I've done this. Now it's a bit faster than before and it's quiet stable now. (do the missing Taskbar shadow with AveDesk)

2.solution attemp : Switching from ObjectDock to RK-Launcher

I've done this too. Well, another step to hyperspeed. RK-Launcher is much faster, but you might miss the Task-Docklet of ObjectDock.

3. solution attemp : Switching from SpySearch to MacSearch

This is just a personal taste thing. ;)

I've found some great guides on tweaking the system to make it run real smooth. Go to http://tweaktown.com (sorry, i can't post external links yet), guides section, and absorb words of wisdom :). seriously, they give some good tips. (Link fixed. -NC)

#393578

Yeah ! use TuneUp Utilities ;)

#393590

I've never ran into my computer running laggy, maybe its the 2 gigs of ram :D

and do those tweaking things really make THAT much difference?
