Open Os X Resources Under Win Xp

Hi all,

I've become interested in porting some OS X stuff, clocks and iTunes skins to be specific, over to XP for our enjoyment.

I've grabbed a few from various places already. As most are packaged in *.sit format, I use StuffIt Expander PC to open them.

That's not the main problem though. I have noticed that some of the expanded archives contains "resource forks" which I have no idea what to do with?

Is there a WinXP program that will allow one to view and extract information from an OS X resource fork?

I dont believe it might be that easy, I tried, and it was "successful" in someway, but I wasnt able to get all the resources. You might need to work the file first on OS X, and then in windows, I think that might be the way, but I'm not sure.

I just thought of some else. DataViz makes a program called "Conversions Plus 6.0" that they advertise as being able to extract just about *anything* from a Mac file.

They don't offer a trial version and I don't have access to a *ahem* trial from my usual sources.

Any ideas?

try download, or version tracker, there must be a demo, you might want to try resorcerer, but im not sure about it working on OS X, it worked on 8 or 9, but maybe not on OS X, there is a demo for resorcerer, I'm not sure if that was the name of the software.

I tried to have a friend who is a MacOSX user extract graphics for me from a MacOSX theme but it's not quite that simple. It seems the Mac theme making programs sort of compile the bitmaps into a different form that can be loaded into the GUI engine of MacOSX. I tried to have him use the MacOSX theme editing software but to no avail.. He tried using a resource editor and theme files don't have a normal resource fork and it tried adding it which corrupted the file.

The best thing if you want to try to get theme bitmaps is to somehow convince the original author to send you his original psd files for it.

I don't know, but it was like pulling teeth. Especially after he convinced himself that the bitmaps in the theme where actually just rom calls which makes the theme paint images embedded in the mac's rom. He was convinced that the rom somehow holds predefined drawing routines which a the theme file calls upon drawing like blackbox in *nix so no bitmaps are involved.

I don't have access to a Mac running OS X and if I take screen shot from the Web, I will probably need to resize the images. Most web pages use reduced images to save transmission time.

So when one resizes, things get messy, image quality suffers etc.

If not much resizing is required, then it's not a problem. But with a large amount of resizing, the image gets very distorted and degrades very quickly.

If you happen to have access to full size screen shots, they would be appreciated.

if its screenies you want, I plan to buy an ibook in a month or two, and I will be happy to do the Aqua-man/soft community a favor by helping out as much as I can.

Grusic, the best thing for screenshots when you don't actually have access to a mac is to use images.google.com. It's an image search engine. Just type in osx or os x or things like that, and use the advanced search to only have it find wallpaper sized images, so it will find the largest possible. I did this and have accumulated a ton of large, high quality images of the osx interface.

I just hope I can come up with the money in time. I plan to buy an iBook 800 MHz 640MB RAM, top of the line. The problem is, I don't know if I can handle my job any longer. I got a part-time job as a baker at the local Tim Hortons (y'all Candians know what I am talking about), and I work in the night shift. It is HELL! If I can just handle it for 2 more months, I can buy the iBook. Wish me luck!

I sort of know what you mean...I used to work in a HOYTS movie theater here in the mall. It was HELL. Now I sit on my ass in college in a computer lab and get paid virtrually the same amount. Trust me dude, stick it out and you get get your kick ass computer (I did! I worked at hoyts and how I"m cruisin along in a 2.53 GHz machine with 512 MB of RDRAM and a GeForce 4...not to mention the 19" Sony Trinitron Monitor which I"im in love with ) just like I did. If you do it...you'll be much happier TRUST ME

GUI on OS X... I was told by a highly respected Apple Guru that most of OS X is based on php coding. If this is true wouldnt it be easier to pull the original source and rebuild based from that?
