Winamp For Linux!

So Nullsoft just released a development build for Winamp3, and they stated that a Linux version was coming real soon.

I for one can't wait. XMMS always seemed like a cheap ripoff (well, it is), and now we will have the best Audio player out there, ported to Linux, everyone's friend.

With this and the release of their GPL'd program WASTE, it looks like Nullsoft is really embracing the Open Source community. Only good things can happen.

Just thought I'd vent my excitment onto you, the A-S community. :own:

Sorry to interrupt you in your dreams there, but I frankly don't know if this is really that good news for the linux community.

While a lot of discussion has gone into the question of the best MP3 encoder (Xing, ISO, LAME, Fraunhofer, etc) litte attention has been paid to the decoder quality. Unfortunately, the nitro engine used by winamp (2, that is) is one of the worse ones.

The name WINamp isn't too appaling for a linux system either I think.

*shrug*

Have fun,

Umm.... I believe Winamp uses public decorder engines that most players use. I know thats true about OGG at least.

xmms has always been about as stable as a 2 legged donkey. ive had so much trouble with it crashing and stuff that i have been scrappig around for something better. (it sure would be nice if they made a qcd for linux)

anyway, im really looking forward to seeing it.
