Ico file frames ordering

I need to understand that!

In an ico file there are frames (not sure that this is the technical word. I am referring to all the other icons inside, but doesn't sounds that great for me to say "ico file icons ordering") and this frames are in some order.

The thing that I need to know is: this order is random or what? I mean if I browse my ico collection with any viewers out there I get some weird previews: an ico file that has the biggest frame 128x128 has a preview 16x16, but others have the "right" preview (the biggest frame). God, i can't explain this!

Is possible in some ico files that the first frame is 16x16 and in others is 128x128? (I ask this because I think the viewers are taking the preview from the first frame) And if yes why? I know that is about windows, but there is no standard?

Edit: actually, I'm not sure about this as I'm checking a number of those icons in iconomaker & the seem to be defaulting to the last icon in some & first icon in others??

they're called layers. I believe you are right that it defaults to first icon as it is usually assigned the 0 integer which is the registry default.

If you look at my screens you'll notice that the description defaults to the first value even though my icons are set at 48x48 via IconTweaker and I use Xentient thumbnails as well.

There's probably a registry tweak for this somewhere. Or you could always edit each individual icon file if you'd like?

Actually, the only thing that i notice is the reverse order of layers comparative windows explorer --- image viewers (irfanview,xnview,faststone[!!!]). Where explorer's file properties shows the smallest layer as the format, the viewers show the biggest layer in preview!
