Replace Icons with ResHack

Hallo,

i've got a problem replacing shell32.dll icons using ResHack; i want to change folder icon but when i apply the command replace icon (in icon group) reshack says "end of system resources", and the icon is not replaced correctly.

How can i replace icons not in the icon group but directly in the icon tree of shell32? i tried to do that, but when i replace icon it replaces it in the icon group making all a mess.

what can i do?

thanx forr all the help

bye

shell32.dll is a protected file for the OS. Every time you change a thing in such a kind of files it is replaced with a backup copy which remains unchanged.

There are several ways to bypass this protection but I would recommend you to use BatchMod. Check this link (sorry, it's in French but it's a very easy to use application) http://customxp.net/modules/cjaycontent/index.php?id=61 There was a post here about this app but I wasn't able to find it...

Hope you can work it out.

By the way, the most easy way to do that, in case you are using Flyakite OSX 3.5 is to run Forced Update. Search teh forum for this option, there is plenty of info...

This link might help.

Edit: Sorry thought you were talking about system files in general.

To replace the icons you need to make a copy of the . dll and replace the icons in that. Otherwise it's in use.

Thanks for all your help, but probably i didn't explained the problem very well... actually, not in a clear way. i retry:

i'm not using flyakite or another system file replacement. i use icontweaker to change some sys icons, but, as probably u know, it's not enough in teh way to completely change some system icons.... so i decided to hack del shell32.dll

it's not the first time i do it, in the past i already highly hacked my shell32 and other system files succesfully... but now i have this problem:

i want to change ONLY the standard folder icons (opened and closed), using this vista icons release:

VistaIconsPack2Ultimate.0.jpg

http://kudesnick.blogspot.com/2006/03/vist...timate-for.html

there's also avaible the automatic sys file repalcer (patch), but i don't like all the icons (actually i like all of them, but not all, in my modest opinion, well fit with Luna VS); i only want to replace the standard folder icons (as in said before).

well, when i open my shell32 (a copy of it, clearly) and want to replace the icon group number 4 (the closed icon), once selected the desired new icon, reshack display the message "end (or out, i don't remember) of system resources", and it replaces in the icon group resource only 3 or 4 icons; i also tryed to change the single icons in the icon section (not icon group) using single not muti-icons, but reshack doesn't make it, it plays again with the icon group (with the same problem message)!

i hope to have been such clear this time

thanx for all. bye,

Marco

The solution I use is a program called iColorFolder. This program lets you change the skin of defualt folders, one of the included skins is Vista. Another feature of the program lets you change the colours of folders, through the right click menu which can be useful, like in MacOS.

The link to the program is here http://icolorfolder.sourceforge.net/
