Geforce xfx 5200 failed, need a new card...

Hey,

I've been using a Geforce xfx 5200 for the past few years in my PC and

it wasn't real great but it did the job and I could play most games without

problems, however the other day something happened and my PC wont

turn on when the card is in. When I take it out everything works fine but

if its in the screen is just black when I turn it on. So for now I'm using the

integrated 32 mb card, which gets about 15 fps in counter-strike :P

Do you have any recommendations for a good card as far as

performance/price is concerned? I have this Asus mobo which has AGP 4x

but it has no AGP slots on the it, so I have to use a card with a pci slot...

thanks in advance, :)

Gabriel.

I've been using XFX6600GT for almost an year now, it's a great card. Since it gives a good performance for price compared to 6800GT. Since 6800 based as well as the newest crop of 7xxx series is pretty expensive, I'd say that 6600GT should give you good bang for buck as prices have fallen pretty down for the same !!

#387737

hmm the 6600 is a bit expensive, plus you can't find them verry easily where I live.

Im looking for something that doesnt cost more than 100$ :)

i have the same problem with my prolink 5200 card.

i narrowed it down to a blown capacitor, which i have yet to fix

but hey, you're gonna buy another one anyway :(

Whatever you decide I would suggest something with two VGA inputs. If you ever want to add another monitor it would be really easy. I think mine were around $70. Nothing too fancy but they work pretty good.

NVIDIA GeForce FX 5500

Well, you might always like this: http://shopper.cnet.com/BFG_GeForce_6200_O...9-31851197.html

It's a GeForce 6200 256MB Factory Overclocked, but it is PCI, not PCI-Express or AGP, but.. It costs over $100.

The GeForce 5200 isn't a great card, but I have it. Cannot do much anymore it is a bit sluggish.

Have you checked in your BIOs settings that your PCI card is your main, not your Onboard? That might be a problem, check that (Start your computer and usually you get to the Bios with the F2, might be something different on your computer).

If none of that works, you might want to do this:

Use Driver Cleaner to delete your nVidia Drivers: http://www.drivercleaner.net/

After cleaning them, restart your computer, defrag your hard drive and do a disk cleanup.

Turn your computer off, open it up and install your GeForce 5200.

Turn it back on and download and install the latest nVidia Drivers: http://www.nvidia.com/content/drivers/drivers.asp

It might give you a warning that "These drivers have not been tested with your hard ware", or a similar message, just continue with the installation.

Restart after installing, and see if that works.

Also, make sure your monitor is plugged into the GeForce 5200, not the Onboard video card.

And is your computer a Dell, by any chance?

----------------------------------------------------------

Have you done anything lately that might have caused this issue?

Windows updates, might have caused this?

I had a problem with a Windows Update #KB900485, messed up my computer a bit and made it slower, plus Counter-Strike doesn't even work anymore.

Other people have had this issue too, so Windows might have corrupted some nVIdia files.

I've had this problem many times before, I'll try to remember what I did to solve it.

I have a text file some place on my computer that explains how to do this so you don't go blind when the GeForce 5200 is plugged in, I'll dig it up for you and post it.

Good luck!

i have a 5200, its kinda crap. when i turn on the computer 7/10 times it wont turn on, but if i keep restarting it it will turn on occaisionally.

coz im cheap i leave my computer on standby when im not using it now...

an FX5500 256mb PCI card goes for around $78.00. Probably perfect for what you need ;)

#388792

@Astyanax: Yeah that one looks good, although I saw some dude on a forum write he

can't get more than 40-50 fps in CS 1.6 with it :P You can get one for about 50 $ on

an auction site here (I live in Poland) but they all have AGP and for some reason they

are all 128 MB :( I could order one from a foreign site but that would cost alot for

shipping plus I don't really have a credit card.

@thehundredthone: I sat around playing with a voltmeter for a while and it seems one

of the capacitors on mine isn't working either. Can you tell me which one is blown on

your card? Perhaps this is a common problem. On my card its the little silver metal

thing to the left of the fan.

I took a pic of the card and highlighted the blown thingie so you can see :)

#388864

@hobbes: no its not the same one. the one blown on mine is C306 (?)

but what do you know? most 5200's have (had) problems with bad capacitors especially 1G Mac G5s

and i don't think that thing in red is a capacitor, but i may be wrong.

#389127

Well I dunno what it is but whatever it is its not working :P And btw Im using the card

in a PC not a mac. If I had enough money for a G5 I wouldn't be worrying about this :P

#389172

Can anyone tell me what that stupid little thing actually is so I can try and find a new one? ;p

#389510

Not sure what it is, but whatever it is, if it's blown out, your card is FUBAR.

I'm pro ATI despite certain mergers with AMD, however, since you already have an NVidia, I'd suggest your best upgrade bet would be a 5500. I was looking at that one myself, until I inherited my dad's new video card from a PC whose motherboard blew a capacitor out of the BOTTOM of the mobo.

#426716

i love the term FUBAR its great.....gets right to the point in your position id go for a nvidia 6200....crap for new games but a good card for editing things with

#426726

way to bump an old ass thread, for some reason i dont think hobbes still needs advice.
