XP slows down after standby

This is a very irritating problem and is caused by any dock or widget software.

I use RKlauncher and Avedesk 1.3 FYI.

Now whenever i have any such software open, the computer slows down considerably after i resume it back from Standby. Noticeable performance hit is on Firefox which just crawls.

If close and restart my dock software or widget software, the performance restores.

What cld be the problem? I have asked for help in Wincustomize forums(when i used ObjectDock) but go not help.

Hope i can find any answer here.

My Laptop config is

Intel 1.7GHz

L2 Cache

768MB DDR RAM

ATi Mob Radeon 9700 64MB

lemme know if you find out. i got the same thing. seems to clear up, though, after about 3-4 minutes.

#387311

Ahh good to know i am not alone. But does it go away after 3-4 mins? Hmm got to check that out.

Mind posting ur system specs?

#387317

layered windows, avedesk/rklauncher being paged out totally - no idea really.

#387322

sure:

amd athlon 3000xp

1gb ram

geforce 5200 128mb

When you resume from standby Windows XP has to reload all the applications that were running before this might take a while and this might cause your pc to slow down.

#387327

Yea well mine doesnt restor at all. Its choppy all the time until i restart Avedesk.

@Shmengie

Hmm, ur pc is quite fast. So thts out of the question.

Something is bugging windows...ahh man...i hate this!

When you say you're taking a performance hit, where exactly is this hit? Is it program load times? Is it Firefox page rendering/window movement?

If you're referring to general environmental lag such as firefox rendering pages slowly, etc. I always suspected it was due to window layering like Ave mentioned. I still do notice lag sometimes when running a dock or widget program which manipulates layering. There's probably very little you can do about it as it's probably linked to how Windows natively handles these things. In programs such as Konfabulator, I've always set the level of all my widgets to "Below" instead of "Normal"...not sure if that helps. I figured that would probably solve most of the anomalies caused by these applications, if they happened to be in conflict because of different layering, etc. Maybe someone more knowledgable about this can further comment.

#387337

Whoa that is quite a hang. The most for me out of hibernation is ten seconds with Gimp & FF.

JesterMania suggestion sounds good other than that I can only suggest overriding app default priorities but, that would cause probably more problems than it solves.

#387339

yeah, i've never liked the way firefox renders. AAMOF, i've been trying out ie7 and am considering leaving ff behind. considering...

The performance hit is everywhere. I would say its shuttering...there is a slight delay the response time. Fx crawls, scrolling, typing, loading new tab etc..

Now when u say u set the level of ur widgets to Below...how do u mean? You mean the process priorities?

Well avedesk uses single system process, i tried the BelowNormal And Low prio settings but it doesnt work.

edit:

Oh and let me mention this. If i use VistaXP theme pack's (made by Kol) Sliver BETA 1 theme, this problem goes away. Strange eh? lol.

And yes, if i unload WindowsBlinds 5, put my lappy on standby and resume it back again, the problem goes away.

I tried Per Application settings in WB5 and told it to not skin Avedesk but no luck.

I tried StyleXP and the problem stays.

No, when I meant "below" I didn't mean change system process priorities. You can do it with most widget programs including AveDesk and Konfabulator if I remember correctly. In most of these widget programs, you can right-click on a widget and in its properties, you can set the widget's window level. By default, they should be set to "normal", but you can set them as "always on top", "below", etc. Setting widgets to a window level "below" means that no window layers can go under each widget, meaning the widget always stays at the "bottom", never overlapping windows, etc.

The problem seems to be WB5 then, eh?

but...but...i don't have wb installed...

Oh yea that. I have already done it. Every widget on my screen is set to Always-on-Bottom.

Well its not WB5, as i said it happens with StyleXP too. Only that the Sliver BETA 1 theme seems to work. Even the other themes included in the VistaXP pack by Kol doesnt work, only this damn Sliver theme.

You might just go directly to hell for saying this. You might upset some people. :P

I've noticed strange slow downs with XP in general if your using a portable. I sometimes forget how fast desktops can be.

But what I've noticed was if your using any firewall. (I've tried Outpost, Tiny, Zone, Sygate, (Will never try anything by Mcafee or Symantec) ) any of these seem to slow my system to a crawl when I come back from standby. AND worst, I sometimes get total system frezze with the system if I disable/enable the wireless.

I'm not 100% what it is, but now that I'm using only MS firewall I never experience any of these slow downs or sudden freeze.

Also noticed 1 major issue with my portable, if I got in standby mode with power connected, then come back a few hours later but not connected to power. I get a BIG AS# slow down and infact it takes about 3-4 mins before the logon prompt appears. Then its ok again

Currently, NO firewall (just MS), using NOD32 (antivirus), RKLauncher, AveDesk, Firefox (usage 95% of the time) = 0 issues.

I would be more money on the Firewall since this seemed to be my major problem.

Thats excatly what i am using. Firewall softwares suck, even the good ones, lol. They drain ur pc and does no real benefit.

about the problem, If i have only RKLauncher ON the performance hit is minimum but with Avedesk its huge impact. No offence to Avedesk developers, that piece of software rocks!

Just that windows sucks...

#387564

if you open up the file settings_overrides.ini in the avedesk folder, you can change the line

; if true, yes or 1 then memory will not be compacted

;NoMemCleaner=true

to

; if true, yes or 1 then memory will not be compacted

NoMemCleaner=true

(notice the semi-colon that's removed).

Save the file and restart AveDesk. Does this solve anything?

#387644

^^Nope didnt help.

#387723

What desklets/docklets r u running?

Do you have the same problem if you don't use any desklets/docklets?

Early on you mention you use RKLauncher and AveDesk. Can you pin it down to just one of them?

Or to just one desklet/docklet?

I am running a AH's-Calendar, Pidlshortcuts and in the showcase there is AH's-Black Glossy Calculator, Dictionary, Stickynotes, Translator.

I tried with zero desklets, and put them one by one but it still gives me problems.

It is Avedesk thats causing the major performance hit. RKLauncher do cause some performance hit but its very very small and not general visible. ObjectDock used to give me the same problem as Avedesk and the why i moved to RKLauncher.

#387924

Have you tried to set Avedesk to lower thread priority ? Just for testing purpose.

#387934

Yes i have, BelowNormal, Low...even tried High and Realtime.

No change of results :(

Any solution guys :(

I have stopped using Avedesk for now :(.

Is the problem related to my graphics card? Maybe its slow and cant handle the pressure? Maybe there is some option to change or something?

#388273

I don't think its a video card issue..

If you said that you have the slow down with Avedesk loaded and no desklets loaded. I'm at a loss.

Have you tried with out the rklaunch on?

I have both rklauncher and avedesk with no problem. :(

Strange, AveDesk with no desklets loaded does basically nothing besides having a tray icon (window).

Yup excatly. I was wondering the same thing too. Even the showcase(nice feature ;)) was empty and disabled.

How come no one accept Shmengie has this proble? But atleast his gets solved in 3-4mins...

And why does it work with the Sliver theme....what the hell! :( my lappy sucks...
