I'm planning on buying a new computer and need your expert advise. I really only use the computer to work on AutoCAD (don't ask why autocad, that's simply what I use), and sit in front of it to "see what happens". Although if I think about it, maybe the reason I just sit in front of it is because I have not really had a computer that really inspires me. I'm thinking on 3 different ones: a PC with intel Duo, a PC with AMD athlon 64x2, or a Mac with Intel processor. If I buy the Mac, I would rather install windows only for my autocad, and try to use OSX for everything else. My question is: is it worth paying all that extra money for a mac?
Buying a new computer
yes it is worth it
Why not? You get the best of both worlds.
I don't think there are any benchmarks for AutoCAD on a MacTel. So it's really hard to say if it would be a better decision for you. If you want a Mac (why else would you be a member of A-S
), I would think about getting it. I couldn't see there be any huge difference between the two for AutoCAD, but I've been wrong before. I guess it boils down to, how much do you want to use OSX. It's a good decision to only use Windows for AutoCAD while keeping your other work for OSX. But don't let the "IT'S A MAC!" Hype get to you if you really don't see the benefit.
That's the thing. I'm not sure if I want a mac because "it's a mac", or if I really think that it would be a better investment for me. The more I read about macs the more I like them and the more I want one, but I dont know if macs are really my thing.
my suggestion then is to get on craigslist and buy an older g4 or g3... try it out... you still have your pc for cad... have you thought about moving to a modelling based package rather than your standard 3 coordinate vector based software? I would recommend you trying out solidworks or autodesk inventor. Pro/Engineer is great but the liscense cost isnt worth it to play around with...

I'm also in the market for a new computer, Right now i'm waiting for the Intel PowerMac even it's not coming out until the end of the year it's better to wait it out, Right know I have Mac Mini and a Dell XPS but once the new PowerMac arrives i'm dumping both computers and just have one computer that I can use either osx and window on same computer and you really do get best of both world.
