How customisable are macs?

i'm still waiting for my 15" macbook to arrive, but something had me pondering the other day;

we emulate OSX for its beautiful themes, icons, visual styles and cool user interface, but while it might be a beautiful looking OS, im wondering how easy the OS is to customise...

When i customise windows XP, theres always that icon that never changes, the button that just wont skin, the hack you have to do just to make the program work with a skin, the risk involved with using boot screens, etc, etc...

so how easy is it to change all the icons at once?

can you skin all the iLife apps at once (to match the current theme)?

can you change the bootscreen?

can you change the logon screen?

can you change the logon screen background?

how widespread is the visual style?

but most of all, how easy is it? how long does it take to makeover the OS, and give it a new all over cool look?

That's what I personally think, since I started using OSX and with comparision to XP !!

I can answer some of your questions...

I dont *think* can skin the iLife apps.

The bootscreen can be changed, but with limitations. there is info on resexcellence.

The logon screen can easily be changed.

I dont know if you can change JUST the background of the logon screen straight out of the box, but you could probably just make your own logon screen with only the background changed.

I dont quite know what you mean, but you can tell ShapeShifter which applications to skin, and prefernces like if brushed apps get skinned or not... just keep in mind that apps are brushed for a good reason. you'll notice why if you skin them with any ordinary theme.

anything els eyou couyld probably find out about on resexcellence.

This does NOT belong in GD and you know it. Thus i'm closing it instead of moving it.
