[link] Rockbox firmware

First of all, I know about the old thread about alternative firmware... but it is ways too old to bump it up.

Made my Nano sound MUCH better. And allowed me to use inverse display colours (black background, white text and graphics) - just what a black ipod's owner needs ))

And crossfades, yeah.... sweeet.

One big minus - tag navigation still buggy... but I hope they'll make it work after all.

UPD: ACHTUNG!!!! Before trying the software consider that it is shipped As IS without any support or warranty. Moreover, If your iPod somehow breaks with this software installed, it will most likely break Apple's warranty. Remember that the software is under heavy development and you use it at your own risk.

To NilColor: Absolutely. It doesn't affect Apple's OS or iTunes database - you can always boot default firmware (just reboot iPod and hold 'Menu' while booting) As for replacing bootloader - it's not harder than downloading some files and copying several commands from manual to command prompt At least it didnt't turn out too difficult for such lamo as me

To Slewed: As for warranty - I don't know. People behind the project say (and for me it looks true) that it doesn't change anything that can't be restored with iPod Updater. But, I guess, if eg your battery blows up while Rockbox is installed and you will bring the unit to the service, they'll definitely say that you violated warranty conditions.

Yeah. Anytime. Just reboot and hold 'MENU' - Apple default OS will start. But iPod's interface is almost emulatable with Rockbox except for 'sliding' animations.

OK, I've had this for a long time and I want to inform you that, compared to iPodLinux, it sucks. iPodLinux can allow you to do things such as, play gameboy games, watch videos (even on b&w models!) play Doom, play one of the 25 or so games, listen to music, and do a lot of other stuff! Plus, if you like RockBox, you can triple boot it with iPodLinux using Loader 2.

So how do you install this? Use the installer, at http://ipodlinux.org/Installer_2 . When installing, you can select Loader 2, which asks you what OS you want to start your iPod in, or Loader 1, where you press any button on the iPod while it's restarting to boot up into the non-default OS. You can eject your iPod from your computer, and it will not have any goodies. By the way, if your iPod ever freezes, use the key commands to restart it. http://ipodlinux.org/Key_combinations. You can also use that to restart your iPod.

Once you're done with that, you won't have any goodies. To get them, you need Floydzilla. Now, the installer you just used doesn't support Floydzilla, so you can't use the Floydzilla installer to install Floydzilla, instead you must use a batch file I made, which you can find at http://ipodlinux.org/forums/viewtopic.php?t=10812 . Download, run setup.exe and once it's done, press Install Floydzilla!.bat. You now have Floydzilla! Now that was an older version of Floydzilla, to get the new one, you need to use the Floydzilla installer, which you are now able to use after running that batch file. http://dansfloyd.com/floydzilla.html

iPod Linux doesnt support 5G's either but it doesnt stop people installing it...

i had a 4G, i installed linux on it and it didnt display anything on the screen after booting, although it was running in the background... but if you want to try go ahead...apparently the worst thing that'll happen (if your warranty is already expired) is delete all your music if you have to hard reset the ipod

Well. The two projects have different aiming. Rickbox is not an OS, just an attempt to make good player firmware, though it has API for writing plugins (at least, DOOM works here, on a friend's 4G photo )) I think that there is even the codec to show video for b/w iPods )

As for other rough things like lack of graphical installer, I believe, that is only matter of time....

Still needs some work though.... but I was too short on time and too eager to have a black interface

iPodLinux supports every single iPod except the Shuffle. It's not officially supported, but all that means is that there's a few bugs. The installer and Floydzilla installer I linked to work on all iPods.

the windows one that you can get there does not work with installer 2

also, i just released version 2 of my installer, and you no longer need the drive letter. it now downloads the latest floydzilla and extracts it and runs it all by itself
