Does anyone know where to get one that uses less?

just so we're clear: you know that maxthon is just ie with a different gui, right? but jesus, 7mb is nothing! are you running out of memory?
yes i know maxthon is IE with a diff gui but it gives me multi tabs and such..
and plus when using photoshop and trying to use firefox my ram basicly gets tapped out.
considering firefox sometimes like to spike to 50-80mb on my system..
i only have 1 gig of ram. I was just looking for an alt browser to use when my comp is being pushed. thats all
Sounds like a serious case of Opera to the rescue...
Most memory efficent browser out there in my opinion and the opinion of many others.
Only one gig? I've got 512 MB, which used to be considered more than enough.

And I never ever close firefox. and I started using firefox on a 600mhz p3 with 64mb of ram.
(still have the same bookmarks file from there.)
About browsers, I seem to remember lynx doing good memory wise.
I second the Opera recomendation. Easily the least resource intensive browser I have used- and fast to boot.
There are even some nice skins around for it 
opera's great, but it tends to be as much of a memory hog as FF (if not more so). how big/how many layers are the pics you're working on in photoshop???? jebus man, I've never had more than 512 MB. what else are you running that takes up so much mem?? or is it all photoshop???
in photoshop ive worked on a poster that was 15x19(something like that) at 300dpi with about 30+layers.. of course the layers are sep in folders to minimize the confusion.
or when i have illustrator photoshop imageready and dreamweaver open.. that also kinda kills me lol.
on my old system it was a 1.33 tbird and i had 1.5gig of ram lol.
when trying to do work on the computer at work it gets even worse i don't even think that comp only has 256mb of ram lol
I understand memory hog when working on Poster/Hoarding size images at 300 DPI.

well i was going to suggest that you have some spyware or something because i can run PS with Firefox open (+several tabs) on just 512mb, but then i read:

so i can totally understand how you run out of ram 
. i find it hard to imagine that Opera really can run on less than 7mb of ram, tho i suppose you can really trim it down and use just the basic features and that might do it for ya. good luck!
Opera can be set to use little RAM. If ones opens 'Preferences', and then 'History' one will see an option to limit the Memory Cache.
Quick question: Have you ever considered increasing your PC's RAM?
Lynx... you won't find a slimmer browser.
i heard the new version of opera i think 9.0 now available as beta takes less memory than the earlier versions... may try that it even has inbuilt bittorrent client in it
yea firefox does take up alot of memory but i never had any siginificant problems running photoshop and firefox at the sametime, i have a 512 pc3200 ram too.
I found a trick last night to get Firefox to lay off eating RAM like kids eat cookies.
Type about:config in Firefox's address bar.
Browse to the line/key/whatever the fack named 'browser.cache.memory.capacity'.
If there isn't one, right click just whatever key and make a new one of Integer type.
Set the value in kilobytes as you see fit for how much RAM you have. Like I have mine at 16MB (16384).
My RAM use is still at 28 megs, but that beats the crap out of 40 some when only one tab is open.
Even before I did that I could run FFx and PS CS2 of all mothers without too much lag, which I was just doing the otehr night. And my comp's only got 192 megs in it.
Of course, I didn't have 30 layers on huge posters going on either. I was just blending together a wallpaper, 1024 x 768 with about 3 or 4 layers tops. And iTunes in the background, and OB and OD and etc. etc.
And on top of that I've been having a problem lately where some mysterious force is sucking my RAM down to the point that only about 50 megs is available for apps. I haven't even installed anything worthy of causing it, and I've been scanning like a mofo trying to figure out why my page file and ram's being eaten more when nothing's there or on to account for it or is higher than normal.

512 is still more than enough (depending on what you do) all a gig has done is made me lazy.
If you want really fast browsing then do away with graphics and check out I believe it's called Lynx, a text only browser.

yes I have and yes i plan to but untill i can scrape enough money together to get more ram i am trying to find another solution for the mean time. and plus if i can find a slim browser to use day to day then that would work out even better.
Ill look into that trick to try to decrease the ram useage of firefox.. does firefox slow down at all when this is done?
I tried doing this with a little higher memory cap and Firefox started hanging completely when its memory got high, and it had to be ended via Task Manager. I don't know if the two are related, though...

P.S: Try for yourself and if it happens to you, then it's easily undoable.
