Hi, I just registered on this form. I am having problems with my Compaq laptop & hope someone can help. After having the screen open for a while, when I close it, it makes a cracking or snapping sound. Kind of like the hinges need lubricating. Does anyone know how I can fix this? If I can use a lubricant, what kind?

what i would do is google compaq schematics and hopefully find how to disassemble the keyboard panel and get to the hinges...
be very careful of you monitor cable as it is extremely fragile...
Most likely you have dirt, dust, gum, etc stuck around the hinges... use a q-tip/toothpick/etc to clean it well... avoid using air dusters...
if you must use a lubricant, i suggest a teflon or silicon based... do not spray directly on but wipe on using a small applicator such as q-tip or what not...
2nd option... buy a new laptop 
the air in the can is at a high pressure... as you "spray" the air out, you are lowering the pressure at a very high rate... pressure is directly proportional to temperature... hence why the can gets very cold... as it cools, the air condenses... condensation is well, water... so you are effectively spraying water (moisture) onto an electric component... now im not saying that you should never under any circumstance use an air duster, because they are quite convenient... if you do use them around electronics, be sure to allow ample time for the boards and connections to air out and dry... but he has a laptop.. and if moisture is trapped its hard to dry out...
secondly... air dusters generally force dust and other debris farther into small areas...
