Sorry if this is a stupid problem, but would anybody have any solution to a problem like this :
I dont know what happened, but after installing flyakite my icons started to display this background colour, also, some of my icons didnt change at all (as in, to the the OSX themed ones).
Any help is appreciated, it's just frustrating to look at 
Control Panel --> System --> Advanced --> Performance --> Settings --> Check "Use drop shadows for icon labels on the desktop

Do a Google search for "removing color background from desktop icons". The 2nd hit has the solution.
Yes, I did just that, and it didnt work, I probably should have mentioned that in the orignial post, sorry.
So in conclusion, that didnt solve the problem.
It could also be that you used a PNG as your wallpaper... in that case convert it to JPG first.

Restart? Always works for me.
Right click desktop > arrange icons by > Uncheck "Lock Web Items on Desktop"
And if that doesn't work, enable Active Desktop (If you have XP Pro, Start Menu-->Run-->gpedit.msc--> User Configuration-->Desktop-->ActiveDesktop, and change Enable ActiveDesktop to Enabled.

this happens to me and i fixed it.
it happens when i use a wallpaper that is larger resolution then my set resolution.
lets say i am using 1024 x 768 resolution, if i use a wallpaper that is... lets say 1600 x 1200, then that will happen to my icons.
resizing the wallpaper to the proper resolution has helped me. hope my solution helps you.

Get a better graphics card. Also make sure your background isn't .PNG because I know that happens when you do that. Stick to .jpeg.
Funny... I never had problem with large PNG files. I put 2560x1024 PNGs on my dekstop !!
