Question For Ipod Users

I'm thinking about getting an ipod, I've already got about $100 saved up from my work job...

Any way I'm going to get the 10GB one w/ the dock! So if someone would answer my questions with answers I would really appreciate it!

1. I am using Windows 2000/XP on and off... When I plug in my ipod, will Windows mount it as a drive, I heard you can copy data backup to it... or doesn't it mount at all Music Match Just copy's music to it?

2. What's faster FireWire or USB 2.0?

3. Is the Hard drive inside the ipod considered a moving part???? Apple said there are NO moving parts in the ipod..

I think I can help with number 2.

Firewire 400 and USB 2.0 are almost the same speed, firewire 800 is faster than usb 2.0. Do you have a firewire port on your computer?

So firewire and usb 2.0 is almost the same, but I dont know which might work better on the ipod, I think that the firewire.

The difference between FW and USB2 is that FW is peer to peer, so a computer isnt needed, two devices could communicate. usb needs a computer. This has nothing to do w/ the iPod, but thats really the only difference.

for No.3 , YES, the iPod's harddrive is a moving part. They meant that all the buttons have no moving parts. Its touch sensitive wheel and buttons, when it used to be an actual wheel and buttons on the older iPod.

Don't forget that the dock and remote do not come as standard in the 10GB box. They are optional extras. If you want to get one with dock and remote, the 15GB comes out as more cost effective.

Thanks to all you guys, I only have a USB 1.1 pro built in, I've seen the FireWire boards on eBay for like $5.00 and they were New Belkins!

Ill have to do some shopping on Apple.com.

Yes, iHartz, when you plug in your iPod to an xp machine it will load as an external hard drive. You can then drag and drop files to it just like any normal external hard drive. Very handy I must say. You might want to format it into fat32 if you dont have a Mac. If you do have a Mac, all the better. I can say one thing, iTunes and the iPod are tight. They are like this. (fingers crossed) You wont have any problems with it.

USB 2.0 is slightly faster than firewire 400. I would recomend going with firewire. That is Apple's native perepheral plug in. I dont think the iPod supports firewire 800 yet. If it does then great, but I dont think so. They might come out with a software update that supports it, or maybe in their next generation models.

Also remember that you can change your windows ipod into a mac ipod (and back again) at any time, just by uploading firmware.

I heard that Fireware is in DMA mode which doesn't need CPU to be involved in the data transfer, while USB2.0 isn't in DMA mode.

If we in little olde england want an iPod, we pay more than $210, usually at least £210 or more! Damn stupid! If I buy one from the US and get a different AC adapter, will it work in the UK?
