hey deadzombie,

You forgot the #1 reason for Windows problems. User error. The number one reason there is really any problem, is someone is trying to do something they really shouldn't. Either because they don't really know what there doing or they know what there doing and they know better than to do it, but they do it anyway. Working in a computer shop I can attest that 90% of all OS problems are because of user error. The newest problem we have been seeing, mainly in win9x is people are buying new printers that are USB and trying to install them on an OS that is only 50% USB aware. Needless to say we end up having to either reinstall the original version of win98 or upgrade them to 98SE. We do not work with Win ME unless there machine came with it and then we are very reluctant to use it. My boss is a total Win98SE lover. He won't touch Win2k or WinXP. He hates them. Mainly because he is lazy and doesn't want to take the time to learn the ins and outs of them. So that’s why I am there. If you come into the shop you will not find one computer with XP on it. He just won't install it and he won’t let me install it either. He goes out of his way to bad mouth it at every turn. He really scares some customers away. I on the other hand try and undermine him when ever possible. In the last 2 weeks we have had 2 customers come in to order new machines. They told him they wanted XP on the system. He promptly told them, no you don't. They than say, yes we do or we will take there business elsewhere. So than I have to come in and try to smooth things out. Thank goodness I can stay calm under pressure. Before I started working for him I can't imagine how many customers he has lost over his hatred for XP and I mean hatred. You would think he is talking about the devil himself the way he attacks it. Needless to say I am gradually looking for another shop to work in. :D

And don't even get me started on his loathing of all things Apple. The only good thing he sees in an Apple computer is a parted out Apple computer. My second week working for him he bought a blue and white G3 from someone and by the time I got to work he had totally torn it apart. I won't go into the argument that persued about what an idiot he was and did he realize how much money he tore apart. But needless to say I have that G3 at my desk right now. I managed to get everything back for it but the zip drive. He just will not give me the dark gel zip drive for anything. What can I say he can be a real creep.

I have managed to get him to calm down on Apple computers some. After I gave him what he paid for the machine and got it home, I showed him what it was worth on eBay. Needless to say he got a little ticked with me. So now when an Apple comes in he waits for me to check it out first. We have gotten some nice older G3s in since then, but nothing as nice as theB/W G3 I got from him, but good enough to sell on eBay an make him happy. I think I work for Scrooges brother or something. So you can see I have a rather unique perspective when it comes to working on operating systems and computers. Oh well this is getting long winded. <_<

Its not the users fault the os is only 50% usb aware. I dont believe the user should have to know a stupid thing like that. It should be 100% compatible, like os x. I considor that the fault of the people who designed the operating system, not making it 100% compatible with what it needs to be compatible with. USB, especially, is a very widely used perepheral input. There should be no reason for the operating system to only be 50% compatible. What does that mean anyways?? 50% compatible??? How can something be half compatible, it either works or it doesnt, it either is or it isnt. Man, sometimes I just dont get this windows crap. No offense. Please do not be insulted, I am only expressing my own opinion.

Hmm.....I think Microsoft have done a great job with their OS considering the amount of hardware they have to support. Apple on the other hand have it easy. OS X only works with Apple proprietary hardware. I doubt that OS X would have been as stable as Windows XP if it had been in the x86 environment. In fact it's surprising that Windows actually works with the vast range of hardware that it is run on...

Great job Microsoft..keep it up.

Your right. Windows has a lot more hardware to deal with. But, why get into all that extra hardware, when all the hardware you could ever need it right with Apple. All of the perepherals and such work with Macs flawlessly.

I do have to give Microsh##ty props, though, for staying alive in the x86 world, even though I'm still not a fan of their os or any of their software.

But that is exactly the problem with a proprietary system. They can charge anything they want for their hardware. The x86 world is cheap, it has choices and subsequently it has problems unlike the Mac world...:P

Back in 1998 when Windows 98 was released there were not very many USB peripherals on the market. That was the same summer that we saw the birth of the iMac, the first all USB computer on the market. So of course Microsoft didn't have a fully functioning USB strategy at that time. When Windows98SE was released they filled in the gaps that had formed but again they only loaded the USB portion of the OS with what was available at the time. In 2000 when they released Windows ME they again updated the USB portion of the OS to better except new USB peripherals as they came down the pike. Here it is the year 2003, you have people using a 5 year old operating system that was really never designed to work very well with certain pieces of hardware and people are screaming because there computers are getting messed up. You can see the problem. Even Apple has pulled built in obsolesces into there machines. When they started work on OS X they promised that it would work on all present machines. Well when it was released they played switch- a-rue on there loyal users and fans. All those high end PowerMacs and even some early G3s were left out in the cold. And look what they pulled on all the early iMac users. They flat out refused to work on the video drivers so that those iMac owners could have full accelerated video in 2D or 3D. There obtuse answer was to lower the color level to accelerate the screen draws. I don't know about you but I didn't pay for an iMac that was not going to get further support for there new OS. I was one of those people and let me tell you I was totally pissed with Apple. I spent over a thousand dollars to help support that company and how could they pull that on us. Well I lived with and that iMac has long since bit the dust. It was a great little machine in its time. It just didn't run OS X as promised. <_<

At least Microsoft has worked most of the really bad stuff out of Windows XP. Sure there are always going top be things that crop up from time to time but that is always the case with any OS even OS X. Look what Microsoft has to deal with, thousands of pieces of hardware that constantly get changed and new hardware every six months. I think they have done a remarkable job even though I really would rather they not. I hate to have to pump up Microsoft. But they do what they do well. I really think the main reason we haven't seen or never will see OS X on the x86 platform is Apple simply doesn't want to have to deal with all the different hardware out there. Even if they made there own in house x86 machines to sell it would have to be able to handle all the possible hardware that may get thrown at it. Apple just doesn't want to have to deal with this. Would you. :goku's job:

I completely agree with what Impulseman36 says. User error is a real problem mostly because of misinformation and ignorance. Unfortunately it is life's lesson that one should fail before learning how to succeed.

Jmitch: the USB for OSX is not completely compatible. There are some USB floppy drives and digital cameras that don't work unless you run it on OS9. That would be a driver problem. The other thing is if you buy one of the newer USB devices and try to run them on an older iMac running Jaguar, they will not run at all. The only time you get complete compatibility is if you buy the latest gear specifically built for the latest OS.

By the way, what happens if the ethernet suddenly goes bad on the iMac? You have to replace the whole mainboard. That costs $$$$

On the PC, even if the ethernet was built into the mainboard and it goes bad, just plug-in a new ethernet card and you're back in business.

Question: How about printing a OSX document in a mostly PC network.

Answer: AAAArrrrrrgggghhhh!!!!

hmmm.

Windows XP is the stable release ever by Microsoft. As I read some, Windows XP Home and 2000 is just based on the Windows 95/98 Appearance. But the 2000 is based on the NT Kernel. So, as a result, Windows XP is just a way better than WIndows 2000. Get rid of problems? Install Service Pack 1. This will help you a lot. This is what I need and for. And my XP Professional SP1 is very stable than my XP Home SP1.

Hope this helps. Switch to XP again. DOn't flood up with un-necessary apps. XP will be overloaded. Hehe.

UFU: User F*CK UP.

Sorry, I forget I speak my own bizarre language sometimes.
