hey. i downloaded an educational film in divx format, but it's split up into parts. each part is viewable on it's own, but i want to enjoy this film in it's entirety. i tried some avi joining utils, but they convert (horribly!) to avi and then it looks like doodie and turns a 1gb file into a 14gb file.
oh yeah, it's gotta be free. and it's gotta wash my car and walk the dog. okay, it's just gotta be free.

I use a freeware AVI editor called Virtualdub. Doesn't need to be installed either.
To join Avi (Divx) Segments do the following:
- Load up Vdub and go to File > Open and load the first file.
- Go to Video menu and select 'Direct Stream Copy'
- Go to Audio menu and select 'Direct Stream Copy'
- Then go to the File Menu and click 'Append AVI Segment'
Do that Fourth step for every segment you want to append making sure they are in the order you want them to appear in the end AVI file.
Lastly go to File>Save as AVI and enter a name for it.
You should now have a joined AVI file with no recompression.

looks like vdub definitely did a better job than witcobbler. however, i still wind up with a 5gb file, when there's only 1gb worth of parts. so, thx for the tip, but i'm gonna keep lookin'....

are you sure you're doing direct stream and not full processing mode?
yup, i'm sure. i even did it again to BE sure. this time it's closer to 6gb. granted, i renamed from *.divx to *.avi first. i thought if i did it 'natively' it might work out better.
zaft: ya know, it's like anything. it's not that bigga deal. i just hate when stuff doesn't work right or i can't figger it out. so now, the journey is more important than the destination. ooooh...zenny...
