What icons for what app?

I always become curious about the use of icons...windows users use mac application icons on similar windows apps?... What icons correspond to what in windows docks with mac icons?...

For example, on my dock, I use icons this way:

1. Msn Messenger

2. eMule (stupid, i know )

3. AveDesk

4. NotePad

5. Nero

6. Photoshop

7. Illustrator (not convincing at all...)

8. Media Player

9. Winamp

10. Creative Media Source (for my Zen)

11. BSPlayer

12. Control Panel

13. and the glorious PES5!!

Some icons don't really "fit" the app... anyone knows of some icons on the same style of those that can fit?... What icons do you use for this apps?...

yeh, it's weird... but i see awesome icons and i don't use them cause i don't know what app to use with them lol

A lot of icons are indeed vague--take, for example, the "character" icons you often see released from IconFactory etc. What use would someone have for a Lord of the Rings icon?

Part of it is just visual enjoyment. A great deal is actually interpretation and the fun you can get from picking "cool icons"--I remember in one of Unbe's old screenshots, he used the black mask from the Kill Bill icon set by Brasgalla (I believe) to represent a folder called "Academia."

ok. if you like an icon and want to click it often - just assign it to app you launch offten =) for example... bah! i totally forgot windows application... hmm... maybe something like regedit.exe to tune your OS ?!

Heres my dock. I use all default icons made by Apple, as I personally think they are the best. Anyway...

Dashboard Icon = Yahoo Widgets (terrible, I know =P)

Safari Icon = Firefox

Mail Icon = Link to Gmail

iMovie = Windows Movie Maker

iDvD = PowerDVD

Garageband = Sound Blaster Wave Studio

What use would someone have for a Lord of the Rings icon?

I just got those and am using them. the LOTR cd one is itunes, Middle earth map is google earth, the one with a pen and isildur's letter is mail, and saruman's shield thing kind of looks like an iChat icon so I use that.

Over all I just use what looks good, My dock looks really clasherrific but I prefer to focus on one icon at a time so I don't notice much.
