Holy crap! I just noticed, I had a 110 views in like 8-9 hours.
Red hat is now an enterprise only Linux. the desktop version is now called Fedora Core (wich you can view here: http://fedora.redhat.com/) they just hit version 5, nice little linux 
oh and there is a lot of others, as you can see here: http://distrowatch.com
and heh, my favorite goes to Arch Linux. 
a little edit: oh and while I'm at it, there is no "best" linux distribution. it's like saying Chocolate Ice cream is the best ice cream. come on, it's just a question of taste 
IMHO Ubuntu is great if you have unlimitted traffic and fast internet channel. If traffic counts or connection is slow, then, I suppose, Gentoo is the right way.

I prefer Gentoo, and Ubuntu when I need a quick install or livecd with gui.
Not very good choices for this poll. You missed a lot of hard hitters when it comes to linux distros.

too much freedom can be a bad thing.... but i go with ubuntu, it feels more user friendly.
Debian for the desktop, Ubuntu for the laptop
Having huge freedom of choice is only a bad thing if you aren't willing to devote your time for coming to a well thought out decision. Once you have accumulated mediocre experience, the overwhelming choice gets manageable.
Windows and Apple: "There is strawberry jam for breakfast only." - "OK. I can live with that."
Linux: "Here's an incomplete list of 272 breakfast addons that I know of." - "Nah. Too much choice."

Heh, for a so called pointless thread, people like a say in what theyu think. This threead is a little "frizzie" whith not enough selections, but heh, it'n not just clicking the dot with your choice, discuss it!

Ubuntu.....
I'm new to Linux, and I installed Ubuntu on an older laptop (circa 2002). Runs and dual boots great with XP, but I haven't figured out how to install codecs, or drivers for DVD and a/v playback.

For future reference, if you use Ubuntu, use ubuntuforums. I have never seen such excellent support from any product, let alone Freeware.
