Setting up thunderbird to work with Hotmail

:(

Ok im about to make myself sound like a dumb **** but, i've never used outlook or thunderbird... and have always just gone onto firefox to check my email at Hotmail.

SO now i want to emulate Mac OSX mail, and what better way to do it than to use and skin thunderbird... just one problem- whats all this POP? IMAP? incoming server? account stuff ?

my address is @hotmail.com and im wondering how to set up an account... what are all the options i need to choose ? what is the incoming server? hotmail.com (been there tried that)? why wont it let select http (over pop/imap)?

help!

It won't let you because Hotmail does not offer Pop3 access anymore. Hasn't for some time now. You have to upgrade (pay money) for this feature. There are a couple 3rd party options but one can never be too sure about that regarding privacy and whatnot...

To answer your question further: Pop3 and IMAP are email protocols, it's the language the client and server use to shake hands and say how you do?. Most ISPs offer a couple free pop3 email accounts when you sign up for their services. To set them up in your client it goes something like this:

This uses Comcast and Outlook Express -

First you find the ISPs mail server, for Comcast it's mail.comcast.net (call your ISP if you don't know it). This is the server your client will download the email from.

To send mail you'll have to enter in the Outgoing server. For Comcast it's smtp.comcast.net

The rest is pretty self-explanatory.

Well thats unfortunate. But thankyou very much for putting it into plain English, I really appreciate it, what about Windows Live Mail (beta)? does it use pop3? or does it still use hotmail?...I switched over to it recently.

to others- what do you guys recommend? any freeware to make hotmail work with thunderbird?

cheers.

Well, I use Web Mail, wich is an extension for Thunderbird. It works great with a lot of webmails like Hotmail, Gmail (I use Gmail currently, Hotmail doesn't work for me...), Yahoo!, Lycos or AOL...

Try it, that's really nice ;)

Hey, I use thunderbird to get to my hotmail. I set it up ages ago so not sure of the settings but use this, www.fitsoftware.com for Hotmail Popper, which allows Hotmail POP3 access then just set thunderbird up as usual!
