How save space when backing up 9gb movie

Hi,

I have a few movies on my PC ranging from 5 gb to 9gb each. I don't really want to go out and purchase a DVD burner to burn these movies to DVD. But is it possible top break these files into smaller files that could fit on a CD-R? If so, what kind of software is necessary and what would be the quality of the smaller files?

Please note: The PC that I have was purchased in 1999 is running Win XP Pro, has nearly a full HD and is very slow. This may affect the processes that it could run (for breaking down the files)

though, i think it would be worth it to just get a burner for $30-40 so you can view the movies on a dvd player, rather than watching 1/5 or 1/9 of a movie at a time, switching discs, sitting in front of your computer.

Where can I get a DVDRW burner for $30-40? I checked eBay, but the only inexpensive ones are USB and since my old computer has USB 1.1 would it be too slow to transfer the movie or would it transfer at a decent speed?

burning a 9gb movie to cd's and you're going to end up with about 12-13 cd's/movie

Yeah, and if you have a nearly full HD you're still going to have to save chunks of the 9 GB movie onto it...taking up even more space.

newegg has good deals on burners. just scour the the slickdeals forums for deals, there is at least one dvd burner on sale, many times without rebates for $30-40 before shipping. . staples last week had one for $29.99 with rebate.
