Major breakthrough for Aqua-Emu on Linux

In the past months, there was a lot of hussle about who's going to release a true 3d accelerated desktop for linux and how it is going to look like - videos were seen, build your own gnome from source recipes were ruining many package based distribution installs, but the wait is over:

This boots into a desktop that has it all. Wobbly dragged windows, drop shadows, 'Konspose' (F12), per pixel alpha transparency etc.

Of course: You can achieve the same effects under windows with some resource and power hungry apps from Youknowwhom, but this runs at 0% CPU on my dated PIII with 512 MB RAM, because its not a patch to a closed source OS abusing hooks that degrade overall system performance but the real thing at the real place. Seeing is believeing.

I think its about time for an Aqua-Soft Linux distribution and for porting our home grown widgetery and dockery extensions to Linux -- the foundations have been opened.

btw aiglx is being incorporated into xorg me thinks, so you may not necessarily need another x server altogether...

The furthest i've ever got with Linux is managing to install Ubuntu, so i'm a completely novice when it comes to it, but i'd like to learn more. So, this might seem like a stupid question to you, but can this work with Ubuntu, or is it a completely new distribution??

CDi2, the link herd provided is to a liveCD. Simply download it from one of the mirrors. (The first, Japanese one's pretty fast.) Then Burn the ISO to CD. Then restart your PC and boot from the CD. If your system's boot order is configured to boot from CD, the Boot menu should appear pretty much instantaneously. Then hit 'enter' to continue with the boot. The rest should happen pretty fast and you will be running this OS from the CD. You will not affect any of your current OSs and once you restart (with the CD removed,) you will be back to your all-too-familiar environment.

Ah, thanks a lot, for some reason the fact that it's a live cd didn't seem to register with my brain! But the features that are implemented, it's not possible to integrate those into my existing ubuntu installation on my HD? Am i right in assuming not...?

Ubuntu Dapper is really something, easy to install (You can even install it from live CD (Dapper flight cd 5) easy to use and eye candy. Nice!

Just got round to actually running it on my computer. Wow, so smooth, with so little lag, like herd said, no hit on performance at all. Looking forward to more of this

P.S. The spinning cube is phenomenal, i was impressed at the smoothness of video playback while you spin it

Some where there was a test for multimedia devices, in one of the preferences menus i think, and then it put up a moving image, and when i crtl+alt+clickedthedesktop and moved the cube it kept playing The static kept fizzling and the progress bar kept scrolling So my test isn't exactly full on video, but still, i was impressed. Most impressive is the smoothness and speed... I'm not big on linux either, but things like this do make it more and more intriguing. I wish i could find a decent guide on creating themes for it though.... know anything to help there herd???

Thanks CDi2, I couldn't get any of the mediaplayers to work (Kept throwing up errors upon launch, and quitting,) and when using any of the media files I had handy.. avis, mpgs etc. yeah, this liveCD absolutely rocks... seems to play nicer with Nvidia cards though.. ATI attempts have not gone too well in my experience.

Yeah, i tried it on an ancient gforce nvidia card, and it still ran very smoothly, though with just generic drivers it wouldn't let me go above 1024x768 resolution. I have no experience of ATIs, the only ATIs i've ever used are in the laptops i've had.

i hope someone decides to program a mac os X dock now, since its possible now under XGL. Oooo even the genie effect to minimize to it.. wow, someone could make the best dock clone out there. Live previewsi n the dock, smooth animations, ahh droool. heh

I used the liveCD with a 1680x1050 widescreen monitor and it worked wonderfully using a Geforce 6600GT. Anyone know of a good linux mouse gesture app similar to Strokit (for windows)?
