Windows Stop Errors

Hey ,

I've had my computer awhile, all the parts are fairly new, (less than a year old), I keep the machine in really good shape for the most part as well.

Recently, I've been getting some issues with random Windows stop errors. I'm thinking its my video card, as my friend says most of the time it has to do with display or graphics problems.

I do reformat often, I have two drives, but the primary one I reformat quite often (I do a lot of experimenting). I've also heard it could have something to do with the installation order of primary Windows items, and I mostly do it in this order:

- Install Windows XP (sp1)

- Install MB drivers (network + aud)

- Do Win Updates

- Win Update to SP2

- Install ATI Drivers (yes, I have NET framework 1.1 installed at this time).

ATI says install the drivers after SP2, so I do. Can it have anything to do with the computer running hot? My fans are var. speed and they're usually not running too fast whenever I get an error, unless I just played a game for a long while or something.

The errors creep me out to say the least, like just a few minutes ago, I just went to Strt > Trillian, and boom, my screen automatically goes out, the whole system just sits idle (but on) for about 15 seconds, the screen flickers, and then it reboots. When I log back into Windows, it gives me the "Windows has just recovered from a serious error, send error report?" dialog. It describes my error as a stop error, and that it should have came up with a blue screen, but it didn't.

Alrighty, any bright ideas (by the way, if someone is really sure of this, I'll reformat again to fix it)?

Sys Specs if need be:

- Intel 3.2G 775 p4

- sata hd

- ATI Radeon X800 Pro 256 (agp)

- Asus, proactive P5P800 is it? Motherboard...

- no network or aud cards

- 450w power

- lot of fans, so I assume heat isnt the problem here.

I'd check heat and PSU before drivers and system software.

You should also be able to check temperatures in BIOS straight after any crash.

Also try setting the bios back to "safe defaults".

It's also possible that one of the drivers in your system is crashing the system.

I recently setup an Intel laptop that was crashing due to intel chipset drivers (included with the laptop on CD).

Are crashes totally random, or do they usually happen when you're doing something in particular?

That's all the advice I can offer for now.

To get a bluescreen, uncheck:

My Computer > Properties > Advanced > Start and Recover > Settings > Reboot automaticaly

(this is translated from german, so don't expect it to actually appear like that)

Does the bluescreen mention a IRQ or a filename?

- If it shows an IRQ, go to Device Manager and view "Resources by type". Look for IRQ conflicts.

- If it shows a filename, work out what driver/device it belongs to.

- Uninstall the device in Device Manager and let Windows auto-detect the device again.

- If you still get crashes, update/rollback the driver to any other compatible driver.
