Microsoft drops EFI support from Vista

Great! One more feature axed from Vista.

http://apcmag.com/apc/v3.nsf/0/E666E4A0A30...A25712C008166C4

Microsoft say that EFI support will not be seen until Longhorn Server (2007). Furthermore, say EFI will never be supported on a 32-bit platform. Say goodbye to booting Vista on the Mactels (although it may be possible for someone to create a hack).

I'm starting to get really really pissed at Microsoft. 5 years development time and for what? ****ers!!!

What the hell?!

Just when i start thinking they may have been changing for better they start axing features again?

Hell, people were right, Vista IS Server 2003 with an ugly paint job. :slant:

Oh and Intel can't be too happy about this.

EDIT: ****ing hell! I really, really hope they die soon. They are killing innovation with their innertion.

Now i have no doubt in my mind about switching.

Wow i thought EFI was the only "new" feature left. Now what we have is windows XP with a new filesytem that is irrelevantly disimilar to the one we already have, and a new, power hogging GUI, without a significantly new grpahics engine that was promised at the start of development. Technology is normlly a fast moving market, but Microsoft is holding it back... 5 years! ....zzz... cretins.

#367550

I've heard of Dropping rock on feet... Now I can see Banging head on Rock !!

Way to go M$, they are doing at least one thing right... they are keeping up with their reputation.

But one thing I have to say, They have ability to stuff age old wine in new bottle and still able to sell it effectively... now they are step ahead, they are putting the same old wine in an old bottle with brand new "graphical" sticker/label and still have half the world anticipating it .. :P

#367554

Now i have no doubt in my mind about switching.

 What took you so long?

#367583

you all got some balls doubting the infinite wisdom of microsoft...

#367616

you all got some balls doubting the infinite wisdom of microsoft...

You're right theyre so smart because they know millions of people will buy it anyways

#367632

They're probably going to ditch Aero next ;)

GOOO Microsoft! The faster you show everyone how "good" your products are, the faster you can die like all innert, unimaginative dinosaurs :D

I was looking forwards to Vista but now i think purchasing WindowBlinds will do the trick (and yes, you're free to rub it in my face how Vista is "more" than just a new paintjob) :P

God they suck >.<

Now that just pisses me off to no end.

All the cool new motherboards coming out are EFI based, i.e. no more BIOS.

So what.. is M$ now telling Intel to ditch EFI and go back to the clunky BIOS?

What a bunch of f#cktards. I'd like 5 minutes with the genius who thought this was a good idea to drop it.

Rant over...

On the other hand M$ probably doesn't want people to buy Mactels and dual boot Windows on it.

People might get to liking OS X and drop Windows all together.

Let the conspiracy theories begin.

#367666

I just began planning my upgrade yesterday. So, this news helped me a lot thanks. :) I'll just upgrade to an Intel Mac mini with 1Gb RAM and a 120Gb HDD. **** M$ :)))

in all fairness, it probably wasn't a decision like, 'meh, no one will need/want this.' it was probably more like, 'damn! we will never get this working in time!'

#367708

That's the thing... it already works in the beta builds... so I don't get it.

Sure the current drivers are a bit limited, but that is only a matter of time, but removing the support all together is stupid.

#367760

What's EFI? :P

http://www.intel.com/technology/efi/

Apple already uses it in the new Intel Macs.

#367829

You people are upset that you can't install Windows on an Intel Mac? That's rediculous, the who purpose of getting a Mac is to get out of the Windows world.

well, i think people are looking to dual boot. but basically, you're right. putting windows on a mac is like putting a burlap sack on a supermodel.

#367869

well, i think people are looking to dual boot.

well if that, if they make the switch to intel mac from a pc, then shouldn't they do the exact opposite. shouldn't they buy the 10.4.5 os and patch it (i'm not suggesting this) and dual-boot on a PC?

but yeah, MacOSX on a Mac should the only OS going on a Mac. Vista is crappy.

#367917

I understand that most of the people here going to find it crappy to dual-boot MacTels... but someone might need it for genuine reasons.

I've an iBook and as of today, I'm going through 'switching' to mac for personal computing (web, mails and my photography assignments)... as for my professional computing is concerned I'm sticking to XP since that's whats is used in my office and most of the things I do are windows oriented. That's one reason why I've to keep on XP box at my home as well. If I could dualboot, it saves me quite a money to manage/upgrade different hardware units at home... now that does makes sense !!

But then it seems, M$ don't want that to happen... I would kinda agre with rjohnstone on conspiracy theory !! :D

#367935

LOL ROFL and people were saying Vista was the best OS ever, my a$$!!!! nothing coming from M$ is good

Wow, how clueless are you? EFI (Extensible Firmware Interface) is not just some sort of updated BIOS that will let you run Vista on your Mactel.

EFI is a completely new architecture; a new way of interfacing between the operating system and hardware. Using EFI it is possible to move device drivers back where they belong - at the lowest level of the system. That means you can have drivers for networking and memory management loaded at the firmware level. The way EFI-compliant OSes will handle these drivers are that whenever an attempt in made by the OS to directly access the hardware, the call will instead be re-routed to the EFI drivers.

Furthermore these drivers will be OS independent which means that you can have your PC connect to the Internet (to say perhaps download updated drivers) before an OS is even installed!

Also EFI is fully upgradeable unlike BIOS. For example, hard drive manufacturers may begin to sell hard drives with a hidden EFI partition that can add additional functions to the EFI ROM on the motherboard on-the-fly.

Wait, there's more. EFI also has the capability to run a shell environment which can be run before loading the OS. Therefore it is possible to run diagnostic or configuration utilities before the system has loaded any operating system. It is even possible to run CDs or DVDs using this shell (because remember drivers for these can be loaded at EFI-level).

The fact that Microsoft would chose a 20-year old POS over EFI is something that boggles my mind. That in my opinion (and not the fact that we cannot run Vista on a Mac) is a VERY big deal.

I know we're getting a little off topic here with the dual-boot discussion, however, I'll add my two cents. Although my primary computer is a Mac, I use a Windows PC on a daily basis. By no means am I a bigot/zealot as computers are not a religion for me. They are a tool... that's all... just as a hammer is a tool. For me dual-boot serves no practical purpose as I am constantly switching from Mac to PC. (I use a virtual desktop manager on the Mac, and have a MS Remote Desktop Connection to my PC in one of the virtual desktops.) I also move alot of files from the PC to Mac as well. My computing environment of choice is running Mac OS X and Windows concurrently on the same machine. I can do that now with Virtual PC, however it's painfully slow. If things go as planned, Microsoft should be releasing a new version of Virtual PC that runs natively on the Intel Mac in early 2007. Then I can retire my Powerbook and get a new Intel Mac :)

#367952

I'm with Sid here, it's not about dual booting at all, because that is such an insignificantly tiny segment of the computer market. Think about it, only a small percentage own macs, and of that, not everyone is going to want to dual boot, or maybe not even know how. The issue is about sticking with a system from a by-gone age, that can only hold back all aspects of the industry in terms of software and hardware.

#367963

The point is that MS is killing the advancement of the PC platform with their slow and idiotic moves.

Why would any OEM order EFI mobos now when no OS will support it?

#367966

Glad I have completely switched now. Only have XP running in VPC on my PowerBook. Be nice when they update VPC for MacTel but I'm not in a rush.

Stupid move by MS.

#368034

@sid: Ok and? But that's not why people are whining for. They're whining because they can't dual-boot Vista + OSX and that's all you need to know.
