could you recommend a virtual desktop app?

What virtual desktop application R U using?

I've been googling around quite a number of times, but I somehow couldn't find a virtual desktop solution I'd really use for long time.

What I imagine:

-Put images of the virtual desktops next to each-other to the desktops themselves.

-If there are frames around them, they should be skinnable.

-If the desktop switcher is not on the desktop itself, it should be presented on ObjectBar.

What I'd expect but won't happen:

-Mac-like cube transitions between desktops

Anyway, which virtual desktop are you using?

I'm quite happy with the Microsoft Powertoy: hotkeys, preview (skinnable via reshacker), not much running and a single button in the taskbar. No taskbar -> invisible

cube transitions exist for linux, I think it was called 3ddesktop and I loved it.

my favorite implementation of virtual desktops was in litestep (oh, memories)-- I had desktop switching based on moving the cursor offscreen, but couldn't have unique wallpapers as I remember.

anyway, I too use the XP powertoy, although the way I use it now, I just have 4 options for different wallpaper "on deck" and minimizing to RKlauncher lets me take my apps w/ me to each desk.

In conclusion, I have never seen virtual desktops implemented well (at least for free) on PC... Maybe it's just me, but I found them to have tremendous productivity and efficiency potential, but most implementations are problematic in one way or another. My recommendation: powertoy + hotkeys.

Would be better if the taskbar got cleared tho...but its not bad at all.

Thanks for the ideas so far.

NC: kvwm is pretty nice, however I wouldn't mind seeing the apps in the little desktops, and if the taskbar would show only the apps running on the respective virtual desktop. Simple, but with just some customizations, the little desktop replicas looked absolutely as I expected.

wh0ami5: the best so far. I removed the caption, so it don't look like a downsized application, but a small tool --as it really should. If it could be skinnable I'd get rid of the thick border as well, but I guess this won't stop me from using it.
