I had an observation with my duo core 1.83Ghz processor that according to cpuid it runs at around 980Mhz until it is bein used when it jumps up to 1.83Ghz so I am wondering is that part of the specs for power saving or is my processor faulty?
Is it to do with how it keeps power efficiency by changing the clock speed or is it a problem - if anyone knows please let me know! thanks!
It's called SpeedStep. The processor's clock speed will change depending on the task load. It's a power-saving feature that Intel's been using for quite a while in the Pentium M line.
this is speedstepping! If the CPU were to work constantly at 1,8ghz you would only get around half an hour on the battery! When running a Word program why would you want a 1,83 ghz? do you really think it would help you type better? No all modern cpu's will have some form of speedstepping and only "unleash" the full power when needed. This saves a serious amount of precious batterytime, which in turn makes you more mobile. The old pentium M used quite a bit of watts, but the core duo only uses around 35W in full mode, and core solo even less. this also generates less heat and therefore requires less cooling and makes less noise.
