Problem to record with a microphone

Hi everyone,

I just bought a new microphone (Philips SBC MD150, a cheap one, ~20 USD), in order to record myself singing and stuff. But there is one major problem, the background or static (?) noise.

I used to record myself with my webcam but there was too much of this noise and of course the quality was bad, so that's why I decided to buy a real mic. But as I said there's still this problem.

So i was wondering if this is only due to the quality of mic and I have to buy a real expensive pro one, or if anything can be done in the settings of my machine to change that.

BTW, i'm using Cool Edit Pro 2.1 as a software.

Although there are some improvement, the noise still exists; pops, crackle, hiss, you name it. Most probably because it's too sensitive, and my room is a bit noisy. (PC sound, traffic outside, wind blowing, etc..)

Buying a real good, sensitive mic would probably made it worse; especially if the mic have no noise cancelling system...

Perhaps the best way to remove noise is to make your room soundproof, or using those audio software's noise removal feature. I've never used Cool Edit before but I know Audacity have that feature.

eHow have some tips on soundproofing your room, although this seems a bit daunting to me...

The main problem when recording with a mike on a pc is that the mic in was only designed to be used for recording at a very low quality i.e. conversations etc and not hifi vocal work. what i ended up doing was buying a little mixer with proper EQ controls and connecting it to the line input on the sound card doing it this way you can get much better results..

There is a solution published for the cracle problems with usb audio devices (started after an Apple driver update... )

If you need to revert back, you just have to use Applications->Utilities->Terminal

and issue the following command:

sudo cp -Rfvp /AppleUSBAudio.kext /System/Library/Extensions/

That is just an installer for the AppleUSBAudio.kext from Tiger 4.10 (I don´t see any reference at the source to the "WARNING: AppleUSBAudio has detected that a connected USB audio device is sending too much audio data."

I was trying to compile the Leopard 5.1 AppleUSBAudio source but apple removed some important clock headers that prevents compiling. It can be fixed, but will take much more time.

The Tiger 4.10 AppleUSBAudio.kext seems to work fine in Leopard, so let´s hope it fixes our problem too.

And yes, it can be overwritten with future Apple updates.
