Video/Audio Codecs?

Hi, i just "made the switch" from PC to Mac (intel).

I was wondering, being that there are so many codecs for downloaded movies/tv shows, how may I view them? Quicktime can't really play avi (i could very well be mistaken). I've downloaded the following video codecs: xvid, divx, 3vidx; but i still haven't been able to watch my movies.

Can somebody direct me to all the necessary (or at least majority) video and audio codecs for me to view my movies? (i wanna be able to use my movies with front row too) VLC player just doesn't cut it for me.

Thanks all

You have also VLC for mac, I think it's the best video player you can use because it work without codecs and can read many files type...

Search for VLC on google.

VLC player just doesn't cut it for me.

Thanks all

So i guess he doesn't want to use VLC and is looking for alternatives.

I guess it's not possible to use VLC as the video player in Front Row? Because that was one of the things he wanted, to play the movies in Front Row.

yeah, i wanted to run movies in front row. i've had vlc player and its good in that it doesn't require you download every possible codec alive, but it requires me to open it up first, THEN the movie (via open file).

@NilColor

i downloaded flip4mac. and i clicked "wmv player". now can i play an .avi file? cuz it wont work (i clicked on the movies and it wont play. just a white screen as the ticker keeps running).

thanks for the help so far.

sorry for double posting

I still get the white screen on quicktime when i play a xvid/divx movie and have downloaded the codecs and installed em in "Library/Quicktime". Can you tell me what's in your "Library/Quicktime" folder (with ext. please; i'm afraid my xivd isn't correct)?

Thanks

Er, no. That's just because it's not associated with those filetypes. Get Info on one of the filetypes you want VLC to open and you can make that type always launch VLC on double-click.

i got it to work. i re-downloaded the xvid thing and added the file extension ".component" to it(missing from the original download) to be called "XvidDelegate.component" and the everything works now.

One more question. anyone know how to get front row to change its "video" source? ie, the library of all my movies are on the external hardrive and i want to relocate front row to it.

thanks

You could create an alias to your external HD and place it in your movies folder. Not sure if this'd work though.

You shouldn't run "wmv player"... it's a QT plug-in. Just open your .avi in QT and its must work (at least .wmv files works).

My problem actually dealt with the Rosetta issue (right click quicktime, get info).

How do you create an alias to my external hd?

anyone know how to get the remote to work with vlc player? it's annoying watching from faraway and then having to click fast forward, etc.
