Oh My God!

Holy crap! We all know that Darwin, the OS X kernel, can run under Intel/AMD PCs. So, what happens if you add KDE and a lot of themes? An OS X for cheap PCs! :own: Here's an article about OpenDarwin and about the KDE for it:

I'm pleased to announce OpenDarwin 6.6.1, available immediately for both ppc and x86 architectures. OpenDarwin 6.6.1 is based on the Darwin 6.6 (which corresponds to Mac OS X 10.2.6) source release and licensed under the APSL. It includes additions and modifications from the OpenDarwin CVS Repository.

Notable changes from the OpenDarwin 20030212 release:

Source updated to Mac OS X 10.2.6 from Apple

this release is the first to be built completely from the OpenDarwin CVS repository. It can rebuilt locally, except for the binary drivers supplied by Apple for the ppc-architecture released under the Apple Driver License

XFree86 has been updated to a post-4.3.0 version with performance improvements and >8bit color on x86

systrace has been integrated and is known to work on the ppc-architecture.

many shell utilities have been synchronized with their FreeBSD equivalents

perl and python are present

gdb is present

DarwinPorts Binary Packages

DarwinPorts binary packages are now available. The packages are available via WebDAV at , and can be installed with the Mac OS X Installer application.

These packages install into the /opt/local directory of your computer. You may either download the packages to your computer before installing, or install directly from the WebDAV volume. (Note: if you double-click on a package directly, the Installer may appear unresponsive for a period of time, please be patient, it has NOT crashed, it is simply downloading the requested package to your computer.)

OpenDarwin Forges Ahead in Bringing KDE to Darwin

2002.08.18 In cooperation with the Fink team, development continues to move forward in bringing the K Desktop Environment to the Darwin platform. While there is more work yet to do, the majority of KDE is usable and relatively stable, bringing hundreds of applications to Mac OS X and Darwin, including the KOffice office application suite. Currently, the team is working on polishing up the KDE-Darwin tree in preparation for the upcoming KDE 3.1 beta1 release, due in the next few weeks.

LOL. I wish it was that simple. What makes a mac a mac is not really the kernel. Darwin is basically a PPC port of the BSD kernel (with a few extra features for GUI<->Kernel communication). What makes a Mac a mac is the GUI, which is not open source nor available.

Basically, your getting a bad version of FreeBSD with the x86 port, its not worth it.

While the Darwin kernel supports many of the advanced GUI features of OSX, your still using a standard version of XFree86, which has none of those bells and wistles. So basically, someone would have to port the OSX gui over, which isnt happening.

Yeah, if you want to run Darwin w/ KDE, I guess its possible, but whats the point of being able to say your running Darwin, considering you will lose loads of compatability.

I hate to burst your bubble :shy: but Darwin WILL NOT work if you have an intel chipset... Just like Apple to only make it for one chipset (I don't remember which one will work...) I bet Darwin and KDE would be awe some...

Do you ever wonder what would happen if Windows and FreeBSD or Linux had a baby... It might be cool to see Windows Luna GUI on the FreeBSB kernel or on the Linux Kernel....

I love Apple, I love Macs, I love them so much... I give my PC a hug almost everyday... And I just gave my Macintosh Classic w/ OS 6.0.4 a hug too... cuz it got lonely!

And taha, he said X86. I dont believe macs are on x86 (oh the dreaming).

If you mean an OS based around darwin, if you read that snippit that was posted, its using XFree86 as its GUI server. Same as linux/bsd. (because thats pretty much the only open source choice).

So you would use a regular Window Manager or DE, thats why its pointless to use.

OK you guys, sorry it took me so long to post here... I never have ever run Darwin, I always get CD-ROM errors, I believe it's only for VESA chipset, its very propietary. OK, i'm gunna be really nice and dump the screen, during boot up, right before it hangs the system, This is actually from Apple so its nice.. i think 2 colors...

Constra... maybe you can help... Darwin boasts the Mach Kernel, thats ok! The back of the Mac OS X packet says "Uses software from FreeBSD and NetBSD" and on Apple's website it says "The Panther update, updates Mac OS X to BSD version 5" When I start the terminal in Mac OS... Its says Darwin! AHHHHHH! What's the deal here!!!

I dunno, I think you all have a little bit of what is going on with darwin, and a whole lot of misinformation...

Darwin itself is an opensource project true... and granted cocoa, carbon and aqua do not exist on it... but this is the open source project...

There is another internal project going on at apple, that it seems very little know about. its called Project Marklar... this is also Darwin x86, but it does have cocoa, carbon and the aqua gui ported to x86.

If you look how OSX is built...

AQUA

Classic - Carbon - Cocoa - Java

Quartz - OpenGL - Quicktime

Darwin

You will see everything is portable to X86...

and it would look something like this

X11 w/ AQUA (look and feel and all the same options, this already exists on the ppc platform, and runs outside of OSX's Aqua and is based off Xfree)

No Classic(its not needed) - Marklar (combination of carbon and cocoa) - Java(existed on x86 for years)

Quartz (based on an api similiar to DX but not DX also part of Marklar) - OpenGL - Quicktime

Darwin X86

As it stands PPC OSX native apps will run on Marklar on an x86 box. cause there is no longer any direct HW calls cause of how carbon, cocoa, and quartz handle the code.

Thats the basics.

Darwin is a port of the BSD4.4 kernel specifically for OSX. the BSD4.4 kernel is what all the *bsds (including fbsd) is made from.

Remember, the BSDs are whole distributions. They develop their own addons for the kernel AND all the other software, its not seperate like in Linux.

So the reason Apple boasts improvements from FreeBSD is that they added some of the extra features FreeBSD added to the kernel (and its surrounding processes), including its new file system, w/ Background snapshots (a cheap way to get journaling), and updated X11 packages I believe.
