Desktop Not Shown the way it should

for some reason my desktop is being "changed" there is a task pane shown on my desktop. I hid my icons and it popped up. Also when I hide my icons the place where they are becomes white... Any ideas on how to fix? I have included a screen shot

weird. i would check 'display properties.' go to the desktop tab, then click 'customize desktop.' then go to the web tab. make sure all web content is disabled (unchecked). good luck!
