Huge latency in online games - What's the cause?

I got hooked up on WoW few days ago and ever since i started playing i've been having HUUUUGE latencies. For example, on a good day, i get somewhere between 900 and 1500ms. On a bad day i get 6000+.

Blizzard says that if i'm constantly having big latency (which i am) it's my ISP's fault but my ISP is saying it's not. Could be something on my comp?

I'm on a 256/64 kbit ADSL and while i'm playing i close everything except WoW and i'm not dloading anything. I also use AtGuard firewall but it's letting WoW go through and on that side, it should be fine.

If i can somehow prove it's my ISP i'll yell at them to fix it but untill i do that, all i can do is sit and try to play.

Any help is welcome :)

Unbe, my brother lags sometimes in WoW on my nice ass connection, I'll blame your isp, your pc, and blizzard.

do you notice this lag with other games as well or is it only Wow?

it's a common thing for wow, just read an article about it, where blizzard is going to buy thousands of new servers because of the lag.. just too many customers..

I used to play WoW, but i had to let it go, it was killing my social life :P , i got 384k ADSL with Cantv.net and i always had a high latency, i thin it´s CriplingDream reason

U got hooked on WoW? I guess we won't be seeing much of you, if at all on the forums anymore :P

900 to 1500ms would be absolutely killing on an FPS online but for MMORPG I guess its playable.

I'm on a 2meg line and I still get BIG lag in popular areas. I know they are in the process of upgrading servers etc so hopefully things will get better soon.

No matter how fast your line is, you'll still lag up in IF/Org. Were you anywhere in particular or were you getting this latency everywhere?

when your lagging minimize the game and open up cmd and ping a website(use your ISP's webpage).

command is ping without the < >. If you get bad responce times that generally means one of their routers is screwed up.

@Tricky - large populated areas dont have anything to do with the server, say you have 200 people walking around in one area - its like opening up 200 different programs at once, its not their servers but more like your computer. Latency lag would be produced by bad servers, fps lag is your computer not theirs. ;)
