[help] PearPC Questions

I was reading a post on OSX-E about pearPC, something that rebuilds the Windows architecture so OS X can be installed on a PC system?

I heard complaints about how slow it was, but I am just curious about a few things I searched for on google but didnt find very clear answers about:

1 - The pearpc website says it 'emulates' a G3 processor (and a bunch of other hardware), how so?

2 - If I were to install pearPC, would I need a Mac OS X disk to install OS X (I have Panther somewheres, i'm just curious).

3 - Is it reliable? If something fails, does anything get damaged or corrupted? I don't mind reformatting, I do it every so often and I'm about due anyways. But I mean to hardware, is it beyond anything a reformat can't take care of?

4 - For those who've used it, I'd like to get some clear feedback about it.

My friend and I are curious, his older iBook recently died and his parents are now considering a leap back to a Dell of some sort - me, I'm really just curious.

EDIT - I did find a post by Philosopher regarding the release of 0.4 and performance upgrades to G4 spec, how it's better than CherryOS and all. Also posting my system specs for any specifics need be:

Intel p4 3.2GHz 775

420watts

ati radeon x800 pro 256mb

Maxtor 160GB SATA

1.5GB Ram

asus P5P800 motherboard - i don't have LAN or Audio cards, I use them via motherboard - can i still connect to my dad's windows comp?

I've tried 10.1 last year on PearPC. PearPC just makes OSX think that it's running on a PowerPC processor (I don't know how though). You would need an install disk or an iso of OSX floating around somewhere (something you should not have ). It's very reliable, but very slow.

I just say, if you already downloaded the PowerPC version of this, then get the x86 version. *I am not encouraging you to do this!* And install natively on your PC.

PearPC is way to slow and shouldn't be tried at all. Internet doesn't even work .

To my knowledge it just tires it's best to connect PPC Altvec Instructions with their x86 counterparts.

I haven't used PearPC in awhile, but if I remeber correctly they now have native CD/DVD support so you don't have to make an ISO (DMGs will not work)

I think you have the wrong impression of what PearPC is. You still have to run windows, but it is just a program like Virtual PC or VMWare that just emulates a computer so you can run another OS ontop of Windows. Either way, it is dog ass slow, and the developers even warn not to use it for any data you want to keep, because chances are PearPC will delete it.

Fun for messing around with, but not anywhere near being a fully functional PowerPC emulator.

You and your friend could also purchase OS X for Intel and patch it up to work on any old PC, but Apple doesn't like this, and it is a violation of their EULA.
