Getting rid of an icon from desktop

Okay, this is my first post, so be nice...I am using a toshiba laptop with windowsXP, and the computer came with an already installed program called Notebook Maximizer. NM has installed an icon to my desktop that I cannot, for the life of me, delete. I get rid of it every time I boot my computer up, but the next time I shut my computer down/boot it back up, there the icon is! I can't seem to do anything to permanently change the horrible smiling-computer icon, and it really screws with my visual style. Any advice? Thanks.

are you new to windows? if so, then uninstalling the program is probably the best thing to do... most likely that app is worthless anyhow... (control panel>add remove programs)

or if you dont want to uninstall... does the application run at startup? if so, uncheck from start up list... check startup folder on start menu... not there? open start>run>msconfig>startup and uncheck application...

let me know what you find...

Well, to be honest, I don't particularly want to uninstall the program. If I did, then I would have. I'm not new to windows. The fact of the matter is that the program comes in handy (...sometimes) and I'm reluctant to uninstall it. But does anyone know how to get rid of the icon?

EDIT: I've unpinned it to run at start up, but for some reason, the icon remains. Good advice, though g8trtim, thank you

See if hiding the icon will do anything. Technically it's still there so it won't have to recreate itself but you won't be able to see it.

You know how to hide stuff, right?

Or perhaps temporarily rename the NM folder? But I'll do what gr8tim said, Run MsConfig, and check your Startup list, should be able to uncheck it from there...

Hiding the icon (yes, I know how) does not work. As I said, I've tried almost everything I can think of. However, I will give Deele's suggestion a go, to see if perhaps it's still checked ( I don't think it is)

Hmm, it's unchecked...what did you mean by NM folder, because I cannot at the moment remember that NM stands for. I've taken to calling commands "thingies" and programs "whatchmacallits"

i guess you could use reshack to change the icon or get rid of it completely but thats gonna be more complicated than the solutions above...

@g8trtim: Toshiba's Notebook Maximizer is a software to adjust settings to save battery power and increase efficiency. I've never used it before, got the description from googling around..

yea most likely a worthless adware app that reproduces the power settings in windows...

the day i got my dell laptop, was the day i formatted and put a non-oem version of xp on it...
