Im not sure what you mean, but do you mean having seperate partitions for the OS, the data, and the programs?

Well, the advantage is that everything is seperate, and therefore not affected by what you do to the other partitions.

For example (only in OSX,*nix), I could reinstall the whole OS, and still have all my programs in tact.

Or if the OS gets curropted somehow, I can reinstall the OS and still have my data, or access the data from another operating system without having to reinstall everything.

Also, having a seperate swap partition speeds things up.

And one overlooked advantage to seperate partitions (only for windows) is fragmentation. Its much easier to defrag, because you dont have to do it all at once. You can divide it up. AND, if you put your serious fragmentation stuff (swap, personal data,edited video) on seperate partitions, it doesnt clutter up your stable music, programs, os,etc.

Another advantage is backup. If you get Norton Ghost or something like it, you can make a backup of a whole partition, but if you have one 40Gig paritition, it makes backup a pain, where if you seperated, you could only backup your small personal data partition, or whatever.

For how, I have no idea how to do it in OSX. :P

ok, i mean like data forking!

.rsrc and .finf forks. Like Heiretical File System Plus forks data...

Is it a FS that forks data or the OS?
