New Ibook

ok guys i`m defiantly getting a ibook... i will only wait till after the wwdc

i wanna get the 900 mhz 12'' model, with 640 mb ram

till now i have to pay it my own... so i gently asked my dad if he would pay some part of it... only he needs to be convinced that this iBook really is the best laptop out there for me... he dont know jack about osx

so he asked me what is so special about osx and there laptop... well i said i will make a list for you.. can you guys help me here with the list

just say something about there laptops or about the os...

when i come with 2 pages of things he cant say no to me :woot:

it's beautiful and easy to use (even for those who doesn't know anything about computers). I've been using Windows all my life and I get used to OS X in ten days...

Here's a list of things you can tell your dad:

1) It is the cheapest laptop in terms of quality for money. Really. Go out and check the prices of comparable PC laptops as well.

2) Its very very VERY rugged. It will shock you. I have dropped mine enough times. I'm amazed every time I see the jaguar wallpaper when I open it afterwords.

3) Its stable. Its UNIX. Its FreeBSD.

4) Its BEAUTIFUL. IMO, the iBook is THE most beautiful machine. I used to drool on'em before Igot mine.

5) I have heard the recent speed bump has resulted in MAJOR increase in performance. 900 is a magic number I guess

6) DUDE, ITS OS X!! (Y) (Y) (Y)

make it sound like its a necessity for your work... thats why you don't want a pc.

you need mac cause:

best for graphic design

best for computer science - cause its unix

ibooks are quite good value for money - as good as pcs probably

Macs don't (shouldn't) break so much causing you to lose your school work.

by the Open Group, because opposite from popular belief, Macs are not unix,because FreeBSD isnt actual unix.

Well, actually, I agree with Apple in this case. They are saying that UNIX is a generic term, and is used to describe things that are of the unix "philosophy". I mean, Linux isnt unix, and ive described linux as unix (on occasion). They are using the "xerox" claim.

Just thought Id bring you up on the wonderfully turbulant world of law suits.

PS. Dont buy your iBook RAM from Apple. they overcharge soooo much. iBooks use good (very) old SDRAM, which is available for $10 at any store, and Apple feels the need to charge $70. Just buy and install your own. Steve Wozniak even said it was a rip off.

Oh, and the iBooks are wonderful. Our school has them. Even though the processors and ram are old, for desktop work, they're as good as any computer. It runs Office like a dream. :wuv: and of course, its got great battery life.

Tell your dad that you know all his dark secrets, and they will accidentially get posted on the web unless he gives in.

Or, tell him you are going to design peoples websites with it, and make lots of money to pay him back (and then dodge him).

you know, my dear contra, I JUST added the UNIX part because I KNEW you'd feel the urge to post here ...

Anyway, the iBooks' battery life is AMAZING. period.

And Contra is right about the RAM. I got the base 128MB and totalled it to 640 by adding a 512MB card, which I got for - $85!!! Compare THAT to Apple's price...

Also, Toshiba is selling a-MAZING 80GB iBook-compatible hard drives for only (I think) around $200-300. Excellent deal if you ask me. so if you were planning to max out the disk space too, just get the lowest one and get a 80GB hard drive.

maybe it was Fujitsu. Or Toyota. I dunno, all these Japanese names confuse me

And you can get that stuff even cheaper now. Probobly $60.

Well, my dear Taha, I am always one to give in on urges.

I wouldnt upgrade your own harddrive though, They are not that bad. Apple charges $50 for twice the harddrive.

Oh, and don't fall for that Airport crap. Airport is the same as every other 802.11b/g. Its just prettier and more expensive.

Taha, Have you tried Mandrake or something on your mac yet? Im dying to see how goot MacOnLinux is.

I AM willing to do the exact opposite though. LOM. Linux on Mac. If it can run natively, I'll be glad to download some sorta Linux to install on my Mac. Is there?

Basically, nothing - I repeat NOTHING can replace my OS X :own:

oh, and some reasons for the laptop itself (if youre in college or something):

portability is really nice if you need/want to bring you comp to someone's room or work outside your room

and moving in/out of the dorms is easier with just a laptop (instead of a CRT, tower, keyboard, etc.)

Its a full featured Debian Distro that runs off of X11 for the Mac I believe. Ive never tried it (obviously), so I dont know how good it is, but they seem to have ported most of Debian.

You have to use the CLI to set some of it up I believe, but the documentation is really good, and think of it as a learning experience.
