Firefox 1.5 ->Safari Tutorial

This an update of this tutorial for Firebird to Safari conversion: http://www.aqua-soft.org/board/showthread.php?t=8691

Here are the extensions/ themes you will want to download first:

The actual Safire skin

A windowsblinds Tiger Safari skin to complement Safire

Fission for the status thing to appear in the title bar.

tab mix plus for better tab emulation

I would suggest you download zoomy because it allows you to emulate the the text resize buttons in Safari

Definitely get the stop-or-reload button It makes web browsing easier and it looks more like Safari.

Even if you have Objectbar get this extension because Firefox's menus are done through html so Objectbar can't access them. This makes a mini menu for you to access your Firefox menu.

Add bookmark here adds a safari style bookmark add button.

User agent switcher allows you to change your user agent, I wouldn't suggest this since some javascript code looks through your user agent file and if it finds Safari it might load a safari version of the page that might include Firfox can't handle.

http://techpatterns.com/downloads/firefox/...entswitcher.xml

This xml file contains many configurations for useragentswitcher including two safari configs. I am trying to find a version of it that includes safari rss.

Once you have all the things that you want above You can start to follow these steps. I will refer to the previous Firebird to Safari tutorial often during this tutorial. So I suggest you have them open in two seperate tabs/windows.

Step 1 The skin: Simply install the Safire skin and the windowsblinds theme. Set the Windowsblinds theme to application-specific Firefox and this Step is done.

Step 2 and 4 branding and about box: download this zip file and unzip it into Firefox's main chrome folder. The branding part changes the title bar to actually really like safari which has nothing at all.

Step 3 icon: Follow the same steps in the old tutorial but for the icon use this file

Step 5 Go button: Is included in Safire skin

Step 6 User Agent: The extension was included above and the xml file you import is also included.

Step 7 compact menu: I included that extension in the links and the safire skin contains an apple button.

If you have custom files in your browser and en-us.jar then You only need to replace the following files in those jar files in order to complete the same thing that steps 2 and 4 accomplish.:

browser.jar: content/branding and small changes in content/browser

en-us.jar: the files locale/branding note: I just noticed in en-us.jar you can change the text that shows up in the about box in the two following files: locale/browser/aboutdialog.dtd and locale/browser/credits.dtd the files are pretty self-explanatory. If you encounter any problems post in this thread unless it's stickied *crosses fingers* in which case I will make a new thread that will have bugs and comments there.

THank you to StevieBM and all the other people who have made these tutorials before him also thank you Mozilla for making Firefox and Apple for making Safari. And all the people who made the extensions and made Safire so awesome.

P.S. Sorry if I misspelled anything I ran it through spellchack but this is a pretty long post so I might have made a mistake or too. And mods if I like have to give credits to somebody else or something like that than just edit my post for me please. Or move it or whatever. I was going to include a tag but the old tutorial didn't have a tag so I didn't include one.

is this any different from the other firefox tutorials?

#357522

User agent is possible, (there even was an extension for it once, I forget the name though).

But, I wouldn't do it personally, seeing as how firefox and safari do render some things differently.

and for the titlebar, Titlebar Tweaks still works.

Also, you might wanna mentain the Add Bookmark Here extension.

Yes this is updated to firefox 1.5 and contains links that work.

Thanks Unbe all though I wish I had known what those off-topic conversations were oh well.

I will wupdate the tutorial with UA switcher now and add the add bookmark here extension even though I don't use it.

#357779

i love you, thanks.

There's nothing wrong with multiple tutorials, Ariw2003net ;).

As you will also notice that tutorial is mostly just the more simple skining of Firefox such as the placement of buttons. I chose to ignore that part of Safari skinning and stick to more advanced stuff like replacing the files and advanced extensions and so on.

Wonderful tutorial Zacharia.cd... thank you! I didn't know some of the extensions that you've mentioned, and because of that, I really enjoy using my FF now. ;)
