[Question] your favorite office suite

Hi- I am thinking about switching very soon and i had a few questions about what productivity suites people use-i know office is avaliable for OS X but i was wondering about how good the free ones like OpenOffice.org or ThinkFree office are, or are there other ones out there that are good or do most people just use office.

The office apps that I use are the basics(word, excel, powerpoint) and a program called OneNote which is a notetaking program which i have seen similar programs for. I don't really care about outlook, since i dont use it right now and would use Mail for email and iCal for appointments.

I would suggest iWork. They are beautiful programs. The only problem is that it doesn't have a stand alone Excel program. AppleWorks has one, but it is a little on "old" side. The new edition of Pages has some spreadsheet stuff built in, but I don't know how advanced it is, nor how advanced you need it to be. Pages is equivalent to Word and Keynote is similar to PowerPoint (not to mention the presentations done in Keynote look a Hell of a lot better than something done in Powerpoint. Both can create files readable in Office programs. The iWork suite is $79 (iWork website).

hey, I use openoffice on the pc side. It works really well, I like it more than Office. The only problem is that the formating sometimes is lost when saving to a .doc file or any other microsoft file to open with micro. office. my solution is just to save it in the native odt file extension and then export it as a pdf. It works perfectly when opening a .doc or any other MS Office format, just the saving is a little wonky. And hey, its free and a quick 90 something mb download so just give it a try.

ok-i think i am gonna try open office-and when and if i do get a mac i will give iWork a wirl-now since there is no true spreadsheet program in iWorks, are do any free ones exist-also, if for whatever reason i need access(the databse program) am i safer in getting file maker or something similar?

thanks

Microsoft Office for mac is actually better than the windows version. Really.

I'd use MS Office over anything else on offer. Plus the student edition is around £120 which is good.
