Is it worth buying a 16:10 monitor?

Planning to upgrad a LCD monitor now...I'm now using a 17'' CRT samsung syncmaster...Is it really worth to upgrad to a 16:10 probably 24'' widescreen monitor? Since I'm running the system on 9800PRO 128M. If I change to the 1920 x 1200 widescreen monitor..maybe I also need to change the display card to a more powerful one...Another choice is a 20'' 1680 x 1050 one...

HDTV 1080p standard hasn't been very popular here in my place, though I knew it's the trend...

Anyone know some site and bbs could provide some useful information for that?

i havent shopped them lately, but when i bought my lcd the resolutions on the 19s were exactly the same as 17"... made no sense to pay an extra 100-200 bucks for expanded view area at the same resolution...

just something to keep in mind...

your 9800pro should be able to handle that resolution without any problems

Widescreen is great for movies/gaming and work as well.. I wish I had one for when I do my xhtml/css work, be nice to have them side-by-side at that resolution

I've ben working on 1920x1200 resolution for over 2 years now. It costed me a lot of money back then, but it is the best computer-investment I have ever made...

Dell has some nice ones...

@g8trtim: Yes..actually what I'm debating one is 1680 x 1050, another is HDTV 1080p standard 1920 x 1200...now i'm using a 1024 x 768 res...so the res definitely will be higher than now....Thanks anyway for mention

@nappystudios: Hope the 9800P could handle since it's 128MB...not 256MB...1920 x 1200 is really a high res....for game I think maybe I need upgrad to Nvidia 7800 series could make a better performance on fps and effect...you're right..it's good for work...2 windows side-by-side do save up lot work..

@denandere : Yes...dell...2005fpw or 2405fpw is what i'm struggling...hard decision, since I don't have lot HDTV resources here in my place. 24'' 2405fpw could reach 1080p standard, but afraid of if it could not bring the highest performance without the much HDTV movie and widescreen game....

Get the Dell 2405 .... it's AWESOME!!! Best monitor I've ever had.. by far! The default color profile is a little too bright... but that can be adjusted. Of course, right after I bought the 24" inch, Dell released the 30"... ...

If your going to get a screen that size, you need to calculate in the cost of your new video card. I'de look for a 7800gt.

Just curious but what do you use your computer for? Are you a gamer? Or are you into design?

You dont need a 7800, you dont need any kind of amazing card for widescreen, you could probably use a 9000 Pro and would never have any problems.

@brianb: 7800 is a PCI-e? If that's it, I may need to change all the system platform...hmm..it won't be in my list recently...

@Astyanax: yes, with d-sub link not DVI. The DVI link may need powerful video card if with some effect on and high res..

Sure, a 6600 would work fne, a 7800 is for the gamers lol, if your a hardcore gamer you buy that. its a 300-550 dollar card... i dont think he wants to spend THAT much

My old GeForce 3 500 Ti (pretty tight card for its age) has no problem with 1920x1200, so as long as you're not trying to game at that resolution, you'll be fine with your card.

Maybe for 1080p playback you'll have to upgrad to a x1X00 card, but since there's not much 1080p content around you should be just fine.
