[help] iPod music gone

I'm quite pissed .

All my iPod music is gone. I normally connect it to my laptop computer which runs iTunes 4.9, but I decided to connect it to the desktop computer (iTunes 6.01, I believe) with the extra hard drive FOR THE EXPRESS PURPOSE OF BACKING UP ALL MY MUSIC.

I was trying various music retrieval programs--iPod Agent and then iPod Rip--and when I disconnected it from that computer, all the music was gone. I don't keep the music on any computer for various reasons, so I was wondering if there was any chance of recovery. I've explored the iPod_Control folder, and there aren't any .mp3 files where they should be, but I wanted to double check and make sure there were no recovery options before writing anything more to the iPod.

My life was in that iPod .

because you connect your ipod to the new computer so ur ipod formats itself automatically (prevent somebody steals ur ipod and steals ur musics as well ) which cannot recover. Sorry!>_< T_T

Sorry for my delay in replying.

Anyway, I'm still not exactly clear on what happened, but its status is equivalent to a drive with the files deleted. I'm able to view all the songs/stuff on there with a generic recovery software program, but I'm having trouble finding a free, stable one. Everything free (even PC Inspector File Recovery) crashes. Perhaps I'll look into a shareware alternative.

The worst thing will be the songs I bought from the Music Store--don't believe I have backups of some of the older ones. Ah well--such is life .

i connect my ipod 4 gen to other peoples pcs all the time and nothing like that happens....that formatting bit is not entirely true

By the way, anyone know if Windows writes data to the iPod every time you connect it? I've left the iPod connected to the computer and the computer on for the last week in fear that something will get written to the hard drive if I have to reconnect the iPod to the computer.

Of course, I'm preventing iTunes from starting up. I want to know if Windows itself will do anything.

So everything was wiped clean from the ipod? Were all your settings etc erased too?

Since your on a windows machine when you connect the ipod it should automaticlly load up itunes, but since you have it disabled that shouldn't be a problem. I can't really see windows doing anything to your ipod.

Just a question, why don't you keep a backup of your files in itunes? I mean what if you lost your ipod? Or dropped it in the toilet.... Your music would be gone again.

I've actually had an experience where itunes erased my whole music library along with all the music files located on my hard drive. It was a worm that was going around, but that only effects itunes not your external drive.

I'm really interested if you find anything else out about what happened. Hope everything works out.

Only the stuff in the Music folder was erased--notes remained.

I don't really recall why I didn't keep my music in iTunes. Call it the workings of a clean freak.

So, yeah, still working on recovery options. I've left my computer on for 11 days now, and the iPod has been connected since.

Is it bad if Firefox is taken 150 MB of memory on a 512 MB system?

I always backup my itunes library to DVD-RW (not to rub it in) every time I buy a song, cause after all: iTunes purchases are AAC meaning like MP3, they're lossy.

And yes its bad for firefox, yadedadeda.... i have 512 too and it takes 60MB

Relax, gentlemen...

Limited success recovering some of the music using a program called File Recover. I think I'm just going to have to write the rest off . At least I got most of my purchased music back!
