[Help] Sitting On Linux

Hi! I am sitting on my freshly in stalled Linux now! Mandrake 9.1 :D

think it is time for me to learn to use Linux and become familiar with it ;)

Any tips from those who is using Linux?

#32712

before Contra beats me to it: use the Man command. man for manual. Just type something like 'man sudo' to find info about sudo and so on.. :smartass:

#32714

and if you don't know how to use man: man man

welcome to the dark side ot technology!

#32715

that's right, use the man command, learning linux is all about reading help files and documentation

Anyway, like everyone said, read the documentation and don't give up easily, even if you get frustrated.

I suggest getting the book: "Running Linux" By O'Reily Publishing, its a great first book, and very easy to read.

Then when you get more in depth, "Linux System Commands" by Patrick Volkerding (my hero).

And dont forget to ask questions here or in another forum, theres lots of help out there.

Keep on learning. :smartass:

Running Redhat. I HATE LINUX! It's anti-gui.

Im confused, so you dont like linux, then why are you recommending a book? And he is using Mandrake, Running Redhat isn't very useful, is it?

If you want all GUI, go back to Windows, and you'll never know how more efficient the CLI is.

If you were in some way joking, excuse my ignorance, I just woke up.

thats exactly what i think and say when people are like

THE GUI OF LINUX IS UGLY>> AHHHH.. well might as well say that for any Unix rather then singling out linux... ugh... you can travel to directory to directory faster then you can click and move your mouse.

#32869

so the gui of linux is ugly.. which one of the 20+ windows managers are you refering to? I recommend you check enlightenment, best looking windows manager EVER. www.enlightenment.org

#32871

BlueSteel is cool..

#32872

In the end, software only controls hardware. The further I can get from getting between those two, the happier I'll be. Who wants to configure devices and edit text all day in order to do things windows does with the click of a button?

Don't get me wrong...I'm running redhat as my primary os...but that doesn't mean I like it...

Give linux a chance! DOWN WITH MICROSOFT!
