Aqua-Soft ForumsI got a question. Do you have to defrag Apple drives?? I know the file format is HSS+, but I have never heard of any defragging applications for Mac OS. Is this because it is not necessary?? Is there any disk maintenence that needs to be done to Apple drives or is Apple just perfect!!??

To be honest, Mac file system does a good job in trying to fragment as less as possible; anyway, I think defragmenting from time to time is a good habit for Apple users also.
To me, the best application for the job is Drive 10: amazing and with a wonderful aquaish interface (we couldn't expect less, of course... 
)
Unless you fill up your hard drive to like 95% or something, no, it doesnt fragment at all.
Heres why: Fragmentation is by CHOICE, its not a mistake in Windows. Its used so that you can fit files in tight spaces better.
Windows - Fragments every file every write.
*nix (including OSX) only fragments a file if theres no room for it to be contiguous. So if you have 500MB left on your drive, and your trying to write a 495MB file, it may be forced to fragment it.
Yes, its a better way to do things.
Ive been running my FreeBSD box for a year strait with .09% fragmentation. And my linux box has like 2% fragmentation after 8 months (im running really low on space and too lazy to defrag).
Why couldn't dumbass Microsoft program windows to write contiguously like Macs? Wait, why am I asking this question? ITS MICROsh##TY!!! :order: :6

That is what I am saying. Unless you write 2GB files all the time, or have 100MB of hard drive space left, you have no fragmentation fears.

Well, that is what I would come to expect from Apple anyways.
The truth is there aren't that many defrag programs out there for Macs, so I knew it wasn't nearly as bad of an issue as it is for Windows. 
There's this sweet app called Drive 10. Its pretty and it does the job.
However, it really isn't necessary. If you MUST, use it once in 2-3 months I guess..

In other words, your saying its really unecessary to defrag mac drives, and that doing it will not really improve your performance that much? If so, then screw Drive 10. If it does improve performance at all than I'm all for it.

Yeah the app is useless, but it looks cool.
Ive seen the app, its got a bunch of different icons on a bar and when one task finishes, it slides over through this blue "aqua" bar. Its not that cool.
And the utilities dont seem that useful. but maybe im wrong.

actually, Mr. Tux, if you log in as Root there are many other options that open up that you couldn't get to if you ran it normally. Some of those tasks are pretty useful.
Also, it doesn't just slide over the aqua bar, it gets magnified too :smartass:. And it looks pretty cool in action.

Diagnostic tests, format check, supply voltage check, volume structure repair, surface scan and a few others...

My CompUSA gets all the latest Mac software and they are always demoing it. They have like 20 macs on display to play with.
I just played One of those Tom Clancy games on the 23" in cinema display. Awesome.

Not to get this thread further off topic, but don't installations of LimeWire come bundled with spyware? Forgive me if I'm wrong on this, but I do recall reading it somewhere awhile back...perhaps it was only in older versions?

i never heard of limeware bundled with spyware, but i dont use it much right now...cable company has to come look at connection (which means im temporarily re-located to the projects of the internet: dial-up)....i know morpheus and kazaa for windows were jam-packed with spyware and stuff...
oh well, maybe i do get what i deserve
I remember defrags on my PC. That reminds me, I have to defrag my XP box.
I don't even have a defrag tool on my eMac and I've had it for 8 1/2 months.
